I'm just guessing that it's convenient for the bankruptcy lawyers hired by AA whose main law offices tend to be in NYC plus the NYC bankruptcy court is known to be anti-labor?

Some see conspiracies everywhere. NY was most likely choses since that court has overseen the largest and most complex cases, which means the journey will be swifter. It was the same that was selected in 2003.
