What's new

Terminal 1 LAX

I second that it's *THAT* bad..
   So true, its the pitts now in LAX. Wish US could move out and let SOUTHTRASH have all of it. The pople who work and fly for them are well...low rent!

Question:

Gates 4a and 4b. Are those two totally different gates?

There is also gate 2 that is near the US club that WN has as well.

During the PSA days what gates did they have? Which ones did US aquire? And why in the hell did US just hand them over to WN. What a stupid mistake.

T1 is as bad as everyone says and worse! First off, although they did redesign and add security lanes recently, the TSA audited T1 and they failed misreably. As a result, the place is now a shoe carnival and will be for time to come. The new setup is also not so clear on which line you are going in since some of the stations are now behind the wall.

On Sunday, flights were delayed, especally LAS. SW had a noon flight at gate 14 that was delayed until 3:30 People were blocking access to gate 10 & 12. I was on the 2pm US flight at 4B, which was delayed until almost 4. The 4pm was ultimately delayed until around 9:30! The line for SW gate 3 stretched back to security, and no cops did anything about it. It really is a labrynth and I am surprised that the fire department doesn't do anything about it.

Speaking of 4B, HP is now using it on afairly regular basis between the morning US flights and the red-eyes for its Vegas flights.

I don ot know if the airbus can fit into gate 2 or 4A. SW now has to have planes tugged into 2 when 4A is occupied, and tugged into 4A when 2 & 4B are occupied. Remember, T1 was designed for narrowbody aircraft such as the 737-2/3/400 series and MD-80 aircraft. Right now only gate 12 can handle a widebody without another gate being closed. Also, some of the odd gatescannot handle the 737NG due to winglets and increased wingspan over the classic 737's.

Somebody mentioned moving to T3. Alaska, Frontier, ATA, AirTran and Midwest make good use of the gates, with Alaska having a split operation at the TBIT. While it may be a ghost town at certain points of the day, it is boked solid at night and in the morning.

I know TZ wants to be w/ WN and that WN wants more gates for expansion, so maybe something will happen. However, you would think that US would not have rebuilt the club at LAX if we were moving terminals, as was originally planned.

Are you POSITIVE of this? I am quite sure US was one of the original tennants in T 1 with Southwest and HP. I flew to LAX years before the merger and we were in T1.

Yep, absolutely positive! You must be mis-remembering. The original T-1 carriers when it opened in '84 were PSA, AirCal, HP, and WN.
USAir was over on the south side of the field. I'm pretty sure they were in PSA's old terminal--T-6.

I remember US (they were still using "AL" then) being in T1 in late '85. If they weren't at T1 when it opened, it did not take them long to move.

Here is some useless trivia, help me out if I've missed any.
LAX Terminal before the '84 Olymipcs revamp and double deck roadway.

No T1
T2: NA, PA, International
T3: TW, EA
No TBIT But a tiny "commuter terminal" with Golden West, Swiftaire, Imperial? Anyone else.
T4: AA, NW
T5: WA, MX?
T6: DL, CO, PS, RC (was DL in T5 back then?)
T7,8: UA, TX (or whatever Tex Int'l was)

Not to mention the "(West) Imperial Terminal" for oddball charters.

Good grief, the brain cells I waste on a thing like this!

Amen to that! I switched my flying almost exclusively to UA during the dark period of the LAX club closure. T-1 is just insufferable without the oasis of the club and it's awesome employees. (Yes, Berna...this means you.)

Come on now, you CAN'T forget Theresa, Stacy, and Cindy....

I fly out of the Los Angeles area, and would love to take the 9:45pm flight from LAX-PHX, but I DESPISE T-1. So I fly out of ONT or SNA. If you look at the loads out of these two airports, it would seem that people prefer ONT,SNA, and Long Beach to LAX. I can not see the negative attitude and the long wait.. not worth it!!

This was an interesting thought I hadn't considered. I would say, based on data, that more people prefer LAX-PHX than any other single airport, but in the aggregate, more people prefer the other LA area airports to LAX.

Is it possible that people choose their LA area airport based upon which is most convenient to them, geographically, instead of which airport is less crowded.

This whole discussion is reminescent of the old adage "T-1? Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded."

The passenger traffic numbers are from DOT Q3 2005.

No, Delta was originally in T-6. When the 'satellites' opened in 1962, T-6 was called the "consolidated carriers" terminal: It was the home of Delta, PSA, Continental, Bonanza, and Pacific.
In contrast, the other satellites--except for T-2, which was as you have above: Pan Am, National, and all International carriers save Mexicana--had one, or one primary, tenant.
TWA in 3, AA in 4, Western in 5 (MX was with them), and United in 7. They were the biggest carriers at LAX at the time.

....we frequently have to get the airport authority involved, and they always side w/ WN.

Well no wonder! If you were running an airport and had gates to lease out, who would you listen to and be a bit more accomodating to? -- An airline with a history of bankruptcies and of sometimes stiffing airports and airport authorities on landing fees and gate lease payments and who has a relatively lousy credit rating.....or an airline who has always paid their bills, never been bankrupt, and has an A credit rating?

Somebody needs to tell that to PHL.

I hear U c*ckedblocked WN expansion there by threating not to expand international service if they moved Delta over to the INTL peir.

Hey no hard feelings it business. If anything I respect Parker's hardball tatics.

Maybe this is why we have the extra aircraft to start IAD now; at PHL's expense.

Sky high states: Love those business ethics. Just ask Ken LAY (what a great name to have in PRISON).
Wasnt someone threatening to move their headquarters lately???

Actually it was Delta who told SW what they could do with themselves in PHL if they wanted more gates.

I would think US could move to Terminal 2. This would help with customs clearance on inbound MX flights as well as connecitons with Air Canada. US and Air Canada could share clubs, US could do Air Canada ground handling, etc. Most importantly get away from the SW zoo.
