I also don't like the reduction in buddy passes. It's a negative for my parents, and for me being able to upgrade to first class. But keep in mind--it IS just a benefit.
Instead of dwelling on the negative, be grateful we get to fly for free (and our relatives who do not work for the airline get to fly VERY cheap) to begin with.
We are still in the business to make money--having a very small fee for parents makes sense. Yes, the seat would be empty anyway, but extra weight incurs an extra fuel burn. Let's say an additional person incurs an extra burn of 20 pounds of fuel, which is about 3 gallons. Not a lot of extra gas, but that still costs $6. Will the company miss that $6? Probably not, but it all adds up!
If non-airline employees don't think airline employees are a bunch of whiners after reading about unions bickering on here--they certainly will if we constantly complain about what we don't have with our flight benefits.
