Has anyone heard of a formal offer for the assets of Hostess?

No, but it looks like there may be another serious suitor in the wings:
"Thomasville, Ga.-based Flowers Foods Inc., is reportedly considering a bid for some of the assets of Hostess Inc., which was granted permission to begin the liquidation process last week.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, Flower Foods, the maker of Tastykake and Nature's Own baked goods, the nation's second-largest baker by sales behind Grupo Bimbo hasn't stated an intention to acquire Hostess assets but the company said last week that it had renegotiated lending terms that could allow it to tap additional cash, a signal that it could be gearing up to make a bid."

So Union workers salvo their jobs so non union workers can take them....Novel idea...
What no one here has mentioned is an alternate theory as to why the Bakers held firm.
IBT, which was on board with management is not a member of the AFL-CIO. IIRC correctly Richard Trumka spoke out in support of the bakers. Trumka is head of AFL-CIO and has no love for the IBT.
Would Trunka throw 5,000 jobs under the bus to harm the IBT?? IMO the short answer is YES. Trumka is ruthless and ambitious so it wouldn't surprise me a bit.
The new owner of Hostess Brands Inc's snack cakes hopes to have Twinkies back on U.S. store shelves by this summer, according to a member of the purchasing group.
For the 18,000 workers who lost their jobs in November when Hostess closed its doors -- this is not good news as Apollo, sources said, plans to outsource distribution to third-party drivers, and there is talk that much of Hostess snack production will be done through existing bakeries, not at one or more of the 33 shuttered Hostess bakeries.
Apollo will purchase and run some plants but will not look to hire all the laid off bakers, sources close to the company said.
Don't fret ! I'm sure those out of work, skilled, unions workers, will be much better off with ObamaCare and a SnapCard !
