Under The You Need To Be Kidding Department

I received the letter from FL today. It was signed by all of the carriers. Still nothing from US, CO, or AA.

Dear US1YFARE,

An Open Letter to All Airline Customers
Our country is facing a possible sharp economic downturn because of skyrocketing
oil and fuel prices, but by pulling together, we can all do something to help now.

For airlines, ultra-expensive fuel means thousands of lost jobs and severe reductions in air service to both large and small communities. To the broader economy, oil prices mean slower activity and widespread economic pain. This pain can be alleviated, and that is why we are taking the extraordinary step of writing this joint letter to our customers.

Since high oil prices are partly a response to normal market forces, the nation needs to focus on increased energy supplies and conservation. However, there is another side to this story because normal market forces are being dangerously amplified by poorly regulated market speculation.

Twenty years ago, 21 percent of oil contracts were purchased by speculators who trade oil on paper with no intention of ever taking delivery. Today, oil speculators purchase 66 percent of all oil futures contracts, and that reflects just the transactions that are known.

Speculators buy up large amounts of oil and then sell it to each other again and again. A barrel of oil may trade 20-plus times before it is delivered and used; the price goes up with each trade and consumers pick up the final tab. Some market experts estimate that current prices reflect as much as $30 to $60 per barrel in unnecessary speculative costs.

Over seventy years ago, Congress established regulations to control excessive, largely unchecked market speculation and manipulation. However, over the past two decades, these regulatory limits have been weakened or removed. We believe that restoring and enforcing these limits, along with several other modest measures, will provide more disclosure, transparency and sound market oversight. Together, these reforms will help cool the over-heated oil market and permit the economy to prosper.

The nation needs to pull together to reform the oil markets and solve this growing problem.

We need your help. Get more information and contact Congress by visiting www.StopOilSpeculationNow.com/sos.

I guess they realize that if there airline goes outta business because of fuel they stop getting insane bonus's

and pay. Makes you wonder if anyone of the thousands workers these guys have abused over the years will

come to there rescue?

Has US posted this letter somewhere asking the employees to write in?

Why would anyone write their congressperson to help airline CEO's keep their sinking ships afloat?

I think citizens have much more pressing personal concerns on their minds in this economy.

Sounds like "passing the buck" has reached a new nadir amongst airline upper management. These guys can't even approach the federal government anymore for assistance, so now they are trying to lure the consumer into the fray.

They are completely insane.

not really when you think about it. People are furious gas is so expensive and they keep hearing it is because of speculators. It is too expensive to drive their car. Airfares are increasing and there are even some two-bit nickel and diming airlines out there that are going to sell sodas while cramming you on smelly dirty planes. so, they read this and they think, this is going to help me get gas prices down...they don't care about the airlines. i think it is not so insane.

Write a letter to help these fools? Link

I think NOT!

I see nothing wrong with the letter...it highlights the problem and asks our elected people to stop sitting on their hands.
When airlines fold, more than just the employees suffer.

How about this? Everyone puts the flight charge deposit on a credit card. The airline then charges their cost plus a modest 10% profit. If your flight is full and the flying smooth, we won't charge you too much but if the flight is half full or it takes extra fuel to get you there because of weather, then you pay more. In addition, the first 150 lbs of your personal weight is covered but you'll now be charged $5 for every extra 10lbs over the limit.

This is not just an airline issue. The winter heating season will be starting in 3 or 4 months. Last year I pre-bought 800 gallons of heating oil at a price of $2.65 per gallon. The office manager at my supplier told me to expect a pre-buy price closer to $5.00 per gallon this year.

The same factors that are driving up jet fuel prices are impacting any consumer who heats their house or drives a car.

Surprisingly, regular gasoline in my neighborhood dropped by 2 cents from yesterday to today (from 3.999 to 3.979).

And both of these have been done and are continuously happening......talk about shutting the barn door after the horses got furloughed..............

While I couldn't care less about the utterly worthless jackazzes pocketing millions at the top of most airlines, and would cheerfully kick most of such greed-soaked, narcicisstic, utter-scum off the nearest cliff.....I AM concerned with issues like you just brought up. Consider the plight of those on small, fixed incomes, that will have great difficulty just keeping themselves warm. It's worthy of ANY efforts to get our worthless excuses for people in "Government" to get off their arses, and at least try to actualy do something useful.

Don’t count on this government … I hear talk about congressmen discussing opening up the strategic oil reserves to bring gas prices down … such talk makes my blood boil …

Right now they don’t have a clue … they can see the stock market slowly starting to slide down into that black pit , and they don’t have a plan because there are no easy fixes … lack of long term planning has lead us to where we are today … perhaps the geniuses in Washington will concoct another bright idea to send out stimulus payments … soon we can all expect a stimulus payment every month from the government that will continually increase as our dollar falls in value ..

Ah well , I think I’ll be joining the rest of my countrymen in sticking my head in the sand as our economy crashes around us .

Dow down 236 today alone ….

Ah well , the night is always darkest before the dawn … 😛h34r:

I don't even want to think about heating oil this winter. So many people are not going to be able to afford to heat their homes. It is really disgusting what is going on right now, and how apparently our leadership is doing absolutely nothing to fix this problem.

I sent my letters out immediately this afternoon right after I received that email from Air Tran. I think everyone should participate. FLOOD the representatives with correspondence. Maybe they would be fighting a little bit harder for the people if they had to consider the fact that they wouldnt be able to afford to heat their homes this winter. But I'm sure that isn't an issue for even one of them.
