Under The You Need To Be Kidding Department

You're as bad as US1rocks.
Yep , I’ve given up on the us economy … it’s dead , a goner , DOA …

Unless there’s some hope out there that I don’t know about , would you care to cheer me up with a rosy economic picture of some sort ?

Don’t count on this government … I hear talk about congressmen discussing opening up the strategic oil reserves to bring gas prices down … such talk makes my blood boil …

They're politicians. They have to make it look like they're doing something, even if it is senseless. So they want to suck the strategic oil reserves dry. Given that there is about 700 million barrels there, and the U.S. uses 20 million barrels a day, that means they could dry it up in just over a month. Big deal.

But they have to look like they're doing something. They're politicians, after all, and their do-nothing jobs are at stake. Harumph. Harumph.

What does it hurt to fill out your information and send? It's not like you have to put a stamp on an envelope. The naysayers are the same people who won't bother electing our politicians but want the benefit of whining about everything.

The high cost of fuel encompasses everything we purchase. Do you think the high price of trucking our groceries to the grocery store isn't going to impact the cost of food? Clothing? Supplies? This is hitting us in the pockets in every way imaginable. Anyone who thinks this is limited to airline and airline management hasn't looked at a newspaper in quite awhile.

No argument here NYC...We've been around long enough to have "seen the movie" many times...Still..it costs nothing to try and set a small fire under them...if even for the sake of pure amusement.

Link to a typical "governmental improvement" idea...PG13 or more for language:

While I couldn't care less about the utterly worthless jackazzes pocketing millions at the top of most airlines, and would cheerfully kick most of such greed-soaked, narcicisstic, utter-scum off the nearest cliff.....I AM concerned with issues like you just brought up. Consider the plight of those on small, fixed incomes, that will have great difficulty just keeping themselves warm. It's worthy of ANY efforts to get our worthless excuses for people in "Government" to get off their arses, and at least try to actualy do something useful.
Let's add to the list... Since everyone will pay more at the pump.... Expect Postage stamps to rise so the Snail Mail will be delivered, Garbage Fees to rise so the smelly crap will continue to go away... If your car breaks town, adjust the Towing Fee for higher diesel fuel... Police, Ambulance and Fire Departments will have to pay more for fuel so there go the taxes.... and add School Buses too. Might as well raise Taxi & Bus fare while we are at it.... I'd hate to think of what Racing Fuel costs are at Nascar or IRL event... there goes that ticket price. Ah... Utilities... Power Company and Phones, plus water meter readers... Fuel burn. and the list goes on. This affects way deeper than a few thousand ticked off Airline employees. Whether writing a letter helps, no one knows..... not writing brings no attempt for help. Good Luck to all of us.

If you want to write someone , write Saudi Arabia and ask them to increase oil production to it’s limits … also perhaps consider writing china and asking them to raise their subsidy prices for gas .

Writing the US congress is like writing Santa clause and asking for more oil .

Pretty much my thinking...Gotta' start somewhere. "Tis better to light the smallest candle than sit idle, and curse the darkness"...and we've all got some serious "darkness" coming as things stand.

This oil price is a complete and total bubble coupled with our currency being worth less and less. There is no oil shortage, not even close. This price is a ton of speculation, and market manipulation. I hope the scumbags that are responsible for this are making enough money - without any respect or concern for our economy or the people who live in America.

i disagree , people seem to forget about china and india ....

It takes time to extract oil from the ground , to build infstructre .... the world got ahead of it's self .....now we're going to pay the price , but on the bright side at least we have our forces in the middle east .... they won't be switching oil to another currency anytime soon ...

Your assessment is quite right. At a minimum it takes approximately 5 years to build a refinery. Coupled with an additional 10+ years just doing the environmental / legal paperwork. Not counting the delays for the inevitable lawsuits. I'm sure somebody will find some endangered worm only capable of living on the proposed site. Or the NIMBY's will will find something to stop it all, again.

Finding the oil is easy. We already know where a lot of it is. Building the infrastructure is something altogether different. If you can't refine it, what good is it?

A group in Yuma has been trying for the last 10 years to build a refinery. Maybe they will get to break ground in my lifetime. In the meantime, you're right, we will all get to pay the price for our shortsightedness.

I would just like to point out, regarding building new refineries, that the underlying assumption is that there is a shortage of refined oil, an assumption easily disputed by comparing present day with those days in the early 70's when there was rationing and long lines for gas.

Our oil "addiction" has been compared to that of a drug addict from clowns to presidents, who is whom is your call. T.Boone has half a plan. Scientific American Magazine, Jan 2008 issue has a great plan, with financing and diverse system, even to suggesting how the present investment infrastructure will be needed until systems are online, some 30 years. Biofuel startups are making quite a bit of headway and, of course, Airbus announced they want jet engines running on a 30% biofuel mix by 2030.

Read this article and when the author claims ignorance of the sky-high price, look to the second chart and see what would cause the price to escalate and then think what happens when the white house rattles its sabers in the direction of the middle east.
