I used to work for Continental Express. While it was not Continental, it was owned by Continental at the time and many of the same benefits/culture applied to their litttle brother. Working as a pilot for a commuter is never easy, but I must admit, I always appreciated having Continental on our team. It was, and still is, a great organization. In the mid-90's, Gordon Bethune had just come to the company, and the employees had just been given there first post-bankruptcy contract in many years. They were paid 75% of "industry standard" if my memory serves me correctly. They had been so starved for so long in terms of work rules, and benefits, they were tickeled to get what they got. The morale was crushed during the dark days of BK, and now, it was a new day dawning. So, as things were improving with the new leadership of Greg and Gordon, the contract was vastly improved over what they previously lived with, and the old corporate culture a thing of the past, Continental was a great place to work. The employees were happy, and happy to be working for a new company.
Continental cleaned up their balance sheet, got a great break from Gordon's Boeing on a great package of airplanes, they painted their fleet, and started paying the employee group a share of the profits including an on-time bonus for every month CAL ranked 1, 2, or 3 in the standings. This bonus was paid to the lowest catering employee to the highest Captain at the company. Everyone shared in the success.
With these things being said...I find it hard to believe that a Continental pilot of all people would be over on this board putting up a stupid poll about UAL's inflight service and saying how UAL isn't gonna make it and infer that Continental is so superior to United. I think much of that pre-madonna attitude flows right down from ol' Gordy Bethune. He is a great leader, and quite the chearleader. He is also quite full of himself and his airline. His overly confident and pompus dimeaner isn't doing him any favors among fellow airline folk. His retirement is coming at this time because he has done all he can do for CAL and he is at a loss about what to do next. After all, UAL isn't dead like he had predicted, and he knows CAL's days as "King of the Financially Healthy Mountain" are numbered. How the heck can CAL grow and prosper without UAL's demise. That would actually require some new and innovative thinking. He is burned out and ready to take is bazillions from your company and cut bait.
Continental is outstanding in their performance and safety practices. So is UAL. CAL has been in BK twice and has finally righted themselves. Good for them. The employees over there are outstanding and derserve a prosperous and SECURE future. They have weathered very difficult times. UAL is in BK and in the process of righting themselves as well. After 78 years, UAL became too big and too fat. We loss our focus and have now re-examined where we were and where we are going. We were victims of a horrible attack on 9/11 and the resulting travel recession caused by war, terrorism, SARS, Stock Market bubble, etc. Our employees can, and will rally just as Continental's did.
Continental was a victim of horrible management. One can argue that UAL has been one of the most poorly managed franchises in the history of aviation. Heck in all business, aviation or not for that matter. We went through 5 CEO's in 8 years! Blood sucking parisites who come to UAL, take their hunk of flesh out of us and move on.
United is fixing their balance sheet, cutting costs, increasing productivity, starting a profit and success sharing program, and starting the healing process. Sounds like Continental's history in almost every way. You are a CAL Captain. You are a smart guy. Please give us a chance to turn our company around without your stupid polls and condescending comments. Your airline is no better. Seriously. For every passenger who likes Continental better, there is another traveller who would prefer United. One could argue UAL has a far superior route stucture. And recently UAL announced a major new surge of flights to "leasure destinations" in Mexico, Carribean, and Central America. Watch out Continental...We are coming for you.
Oh, and CAL is so leveraged, the amount of wiggle room to withstand a prolonged travel slump is far diminished from the days of yesteryear. CAL has mortgaged their engines and parts, sold the majority stake in ExpressJet, not hedged on the fuel anymore, and facing extreme competition from the likes of JetBlue in New York, and heck, UAL everywhere else. Geez, the last time I was in Cleveland, it looked like a Continental Express Regional Jet parking lot. How much more flying is CAL gonna give to those guys anyway? CAL owns very little of their fleet and assets. Keep trying to borrow. Leverage yourselves till the cows come home.
You are living in a glass house Mr. Continental Captain Man. Give us a break. The more you proclaim the superior health and status of you company, the less respect we have for you. Not because of your beliefs, but because you feel the need to come over here and say what you say. You are starting to sound like your cocky leader...Gordo Boffoon as he is known outside the safey of his company.
When it is all said and done, we are all airline employees trying to fight off the tremendous financial and quality of worklife onslaught from the new airlines picking the low fruit with their new employees, their shiney new planes along with an anti-labor, pro-cabotage administration. In the end, we are all on the same team.
Thanks for reading.
