First Media blurb:

A cargo plane, possibly a DC-8, landed with smoke showing at Philadelphia International Airport early this morning, eliciting massive response from emergency crews.

No injuries were immediately reported, but Fire Department units, including hazard materials teams, foam units and rapid-intervention teams, were trying to contain the situation, according to the Police Department's Airport Unit.

The Fire Department reported transporting three people from the plane - which landed after midnight with smoke emanating from within it - to area hospitals with undisclosed injuries.

I do hope that those involved are ok.

Second News blurb:

With smoke in the hold, the crew of a UPS cargo plane declared an emergency and the plane was met by fire and rescue crews as it landed at Philadelphia International Airport early Wednesday.

The pilot and two crew members exited the plane safely as firefighters battled the blaze in the hold.

Firefighters said the fire was under control shortly after 4 a.m. though the plane continued to smolder.

The plane, UPS Flight 1307 from Atlanta to Philadelphia, landed shortly after midnight and the airport canceled flight operations during the night, consisting mostly of cargo flights, airport spokesman Mark Pesce said.

Pesce said the airport would reopen at 6 a.m. but urged people planning to travel on or meet flights to check the status of the flights on http://www.phl.org Website.

The National Transportation Safety Board was investigating the cause of the fire in the cargo hold, which was filled with normal customer packages, UPS spokesman Mark Guiffre said.

The pilot and two crew members were examined for smoke inhalation at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and released about 4 a.m., he said.

UPS1307

It sounds as if the crew was ok as well.

Above all else, we are grateful the crew safely returned this plane to the ground.

Now watch for the renewed calls for 100% inspection of each piece of cargo loaded onto an airplane.

It took over 4 hours to knock down the fire  . Wow that DC-8 sure can cook. The crew is recovering at the hospital from smoke inhalation. Hopefully they'll tow it off the runway soon as it is severely impacting operations.

If that's not every pilot's worst nightmare - I don't know what is! They can surely say "cheated death once again".
Are there any other boards that UPS pilots use that have public access? Need more input!! Thanks - BCD
