Yes there was initially and it wasn't a back-up plan but the only plan when US entered BK. But as the money ran out that plan became unworkable - US couldn't survive long enough to make the transition to a smaller, low cost carrier. So by March the plan changed - merge or disappear. I see nothing at this point to suggest a split. Sure there would be some obstacles but what provision would prohibit a split? If an advantage could be gained by splitting USAirways it will be attempted.No reason to split. The way things are going there won't be any contract negotiations that increase pay or benefits so it will eventually save the Company money.
