WE would tell them "we are the good guys".  You know...the ONLY country ever to actually USE a nuclear weapon...the only "superpower" and one who started an offensive war (stop them before the smoking gun comes in the form of a mushroom cloud) against a country that did nothing to us.  It some OTHER country did the same thing, the US would swoop in to "teach them a lesson" in a heartbeat.
