What's new

U's new Children's reading program

I think the timing of this program may have a little more to do with upcoming spring break travel followed by summer travel. Many families travel during this time.

Hopefully, this will give the munchkins something to do rather than incessantly ringing the call buttons asking more soda.

On a whole other note, did they really need to print this up and mail a letter to the employees at home to educate them on the new program? It was a waste of paper and postage to say the least. Something like this could have been effectively communicated via must reads, the hub, etc.

Astro sez:Had to add my two cents on THIS ONE. I agree with the comment made above along with Piney. I personally feel the entire "Do Crew" Program is nothing more that Corporate Window Dressing to give the appearance of a Warm & Fuzzy Feeling for the communities they serve...... I think that may be unfair to the frontline employees that serve on the "Do Crew".

Etops and Be Careful,

You are being far too selective in what you are reading into my post. I didn't say it was bad, I said it was the wrong thing for an operationally challenged airline to be concerned about right now, and in about so many words.

Monetary donations from questionable people has ZERO to do with my post, nor does PHL complaining, where I have NEVER WORKED, nor would ever choose to do so.

Consider a few other things, while you frown at my posts:

1) Kids are going to pass along germs by handling these books. I don't know how one goes about santizing a book, besides possibly burning it. That would be a real hoot for the kids.

2) Yet another item for F/A's to clean up in between flights. When they're taxed to do everthing else, US adds yet another item to do. Is sky librarian a legitimate job title?

3) Is this program going to be offered in the terminals? That would make more sense to me, since most of the time spent waiting is during boarding - a time where reading to a child is probably more beneficial since you can hear what's being read, and it's the time where most of the kids get bored the most.

Like others have said, it's a distraction. I question the timing and the motive, as well as why US has this need to be socially responsible instead of being a quality airline.

Corporations are in business for only ONE reason and that is to maximize shareholders return on investment (ROI), they exist for no other reason.

If like WN they choose to pay their people well and provide a positive work environment it is only because their philosophy dictates that the above is the best way to maximize ROI, nothing more, nothing less it's just business.

When a management team loses the credibility and trust of their Employees & Customers everything becomes suspect. This manifests itself in the legal concept of "False In One False In All".

So you'll pardon me if I question their motives, intentions & timing of anything positive.

The Do Crew has been alive at America West for many years and have always been involved in these programs. Try to and spin this any other way is simply a display of ones personal agenda.

here is a fact sheet aout th program.

If you are all so philanthropic go and volunteer for a charity on your own, not representing US Airways. You serve the charity and are not doing exactly what this management wants, to make THEM look good not you. If they truly cared about the welfare of people, they would start with their own employees. By doing any type of volunteer work that they organize, you are just making them look like the "model" corporation they want to look like but don't want to make any effort to become.

Oh and by the way, before everyone starts flaming me, I do volunteer. In fact I volunteer at least two days every week to local charities but I do so because it is the right thing to do, not to make US Airways look better.

there is no need to flame you. you choose to do what you want and have every right to do so . it is a free country. i am volunteering because i beleive that reading is an important part in a childs life. i have 2 little boys and i read to them every chance i get. so this program the company is launching is very important to me personally. it's a good thing plain and simple. and i am doing because i feel it's the right thing to do. by the way , good for you for volunteering in other local charities . we need more people like you.

You know your very mature response has made me change my view. You are right, if this is something that you believe in and it does help someone, then that is great. I still feel the reason why US is doing it is wrong, ie. make them look good but if the end result is that it helps someone, great. By the way, I have children also and I commend you for taking an active roll in reading to them. I do the same and so many parents lose sight as to just how important it is.

hope to fly with you soon. have a good day!

Hey, I didn't say it was a bad thing. I think it's a great thing.

The kids will have something to read while Mom and Dad search for their luggage.

Good one!

And, what is with everyone on here? It's a joke people -- get the sticks out of your bums and have a chuckle (or Chuck...if that's your thing). Life is too short to be this uptight.

Oy

Later,
