USAirways/America West Merger Talks -WSJ

While HP's paint job is nice, I really liked the old white paint job. It was very pretty and classy. That being said, the current US Airways livery is pretty sharp...when its maintained.

Love our image here at US...and I DO mean the "colors". Again though, it represents Stephen Wolf and needs to be updated. Dark, grey and dismal with the tail that reminds me of bleeding red ink. In the hopes for the "promise of a new day", change it to something a bit brighter.

The article simply reiterated what I have been saying all along that US Airways and United have been holding corporate transaction talks since the last merger attempt ended. I guess it's tough for you to admit when I am right.

Keep up the good work with your public sources – you do a “crack upâ€￾ job. To bad you truly do not know what’s happening.

Wasn't that a public source you linked there? Ok good.

If you believe AWA's CEO, he's been quoted as saying that AWA talks to various airlines, "fairly regularly". So I am not surprised that perhaps US and UA have been talking. I am sure that you are right... US probably did talk to UA... And HP... And Republic... And Air Wisconsin... And Mesa... And Northwest... And anyone else who would listen. But talks don't mean a hill of beans, and certainly does not mean, "a UCT is imminent," as you have been known to say.

You say that I do not know what's happening, and yet you missed 12 to 18 months of talks between US and HP. At least I don't pretend to know.

So you are correct, you have discussed that UA and US have talked. However, your chances of being right with your predictions for a UCT with UAL seem to fading more quickly now, than two years ago, when you insisted it was occuring.

Phoenix's Mesa Air could help finance move

Phoenix-based Mesa Air Group Inc. has a lot riding on a possible America West-US Airways merger and says it is willing to do what it takes to ensure a positive outcome.

That could include providing critical financing needed to bring the deal to fruition and assuming a partnership role in a merged company.

"We've had discussions with them (US Airways Group Inc.) on a whole series of issues, including investing," Mesa Chairman Jonathan Ornstein said. advertisement

US Airways is seeking capital to enable it to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, a prerequisite to a deal with America West Airlines' parent, America West Holdings Corp.

Ornstein noted that Mesa invested $20 million in America West while it was in bankruptcy in the early '90s and made a $47 million profit.

"This is not something we are unfamiliar with," he said.

Regional airline Mesa operates as America West Express, United Express and US Airways Express under code-sharing agreements.

America West and US Airways are Mesa's two largest customers, accounting for 41 percent and 35 percent, respectively, of Mesa's $897 million in annual revenue.

Some news accounts about the possible merger cited sources close to the negotiations as saying US Airways would be required to raise from $350 million to $500 million in new funding and possibly to arrange $250 million in new loans. Mesa has $260 million in cash and is in a position to come into a deal with a significant investment. Such an investment could help preserve Mesa's business relationship with US Airways, which is in jeopardy.

Mesa operates 59 regional jets and 10 turboprops in the eastern United States under its code-sharing agreements with US Airways.

Those agreements have not been affirmed by US Airways in its bankruptcy proceeding and could be rejected. That could force Mesa to ground planes and lay off about 700 pilots and 300 flight attendants.

Mesa's routes also could be given to Air Wisconsin Airlines Corp., which has agreed to lend US Airways $125 million in exchange for rights to fly planes under the US Airways Express flag.

"There is a lot at stake," Ornstein said.

But he added Mesa could survive the loss of the US Airways code-sharing agreements.

"We are the lowest-cost operator of regional jet equipment," Ornstein said. "There are other opportunities for our aircraft that we could pursue."

Actually, The paint job that was shown earlier in this thread (or maybe another similar topic thread) was great. It has the same US colors, but with a bit of a "fun" flair. It doesn't look so "stiff upper lipped" as we do now. Although they are great, it IS time for a change. We'll probably keep the same old nasty uniforms though.

He's fallen off the face of the earth like any of US' marketing lately.

Seth sure has fallen off the face of the earth. http://www.usairways.com/seth does a redirect to http://www.usairways.com/pro/specials/dc_gofares_seth.htm which brings up a page not found screen. Even searching the site just brings up press releases. The site http://www.gofaresguy.com does still exist, though.

Actually, according to that site, Seth works (worked?) in Revenue Management for US. Maybe he's the one who loaded the $1.86 fares to LEB, ART, AVL, HHH, etc. :-D

Where are HP's crew bases, and what do there uniforms look like?

Name for new company...Metro JetAirlines 🙂

Crew Bases for USAirways are:

LGA, Bos, DCA, PHL, CLT, PIT...and our uniforms haven't really changed since 1989. Hope the combined airline will be casual, shorts and polo shirts. Yeah, I know it is premature and all speculative, but man it is nice to having something else to focus on other than impending doom and gloom.

Shorts and polo shirts are too unprofessional!! Let's hope we stay in a professional uniform.

As I have said for the past couple of years, US Airways has been involved in M&A discussions with a number of carrier’s since the last merger attempt with United was terminated.

Current discussions are fluid and complex due to the number of parties involved in the discussions, e.g. GE, RSA, ATSB, the US Airways unsecured creditors committee, America West, United, Air Wisconsin, Republic, Mesa, TSA, etc., thus there is some uncertainty.

In regard to United and the UCT and ICT, go look at my previous posts. I never said a deal would occur, I said the parties were in in-depth discussions.

At this point I believe it’s best for me to not post any further information regarding US Airways’ M&A activity.

It take the "I love US Airways unbelievably low fares" saying to another level....

PITTSBURGH (Post-Gazette) - Despite the hullabaloo this week about a US Airways-America West merger, talks between the two carriers go back 12 to 18 months -- part of a larger campaign by US Airways to find partners willing to help it out of a financial morass, according to a former executive familiar with the discussions.

So any guesses on who the former Exec was .........................
