When is AA finally going to start service to Warsaw, Poland? There were rumors of service starting back in the late 90's but nothing came of it. Why was Moscow chosen as the first Eastern Europe destination when the O&D for Warsaw would seem to be much higher due to the huge Polish community in Chicago?

IMHO, Chicago-Warsaw route is a Star Alliance route. LOT Flies it as well as UA feeds it. Not a good route to start.

Because ORD already has nonstop service 6x a week to WAW via LO (1x a week goes to KRK), and Moscow doesn't?

The number of people from any ethnic group traveling back to "the old country" tends to drop from generation to generation. Foreign born are most likely to travel, first generation US less so, and their grandkids even less likely to go back.

There's a huge Polish community in the CHI/MKE area, but I'm not sure how many of them are immigrant vs. first, second, or third generation US born.

If there are more Russians who are immigrants or first generation, they're more likely to be traveling back and forth.

Also, the way that the Russian economy is going, there's likely to be more business traffic in that one market than there would be trying to share a market with LO (who codewhores with UAL).

Since LOT is 68% state owned would'nt the chances of AA getting a competing route be less? Or am I off base here?

Open skies with Poland has been in effect for several years (phased in from 2001 to 2004). So, the Polish gov't can't stop AA or anyone else from competing with LOT.

Russia has business traffic that is significantly higher than to Poland. Simple as that.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if the Polish government could do anything or not.

The same could be said for ORD-FRA and ORD-NRT which UA has twice the market that AA has, however AA has been successful in both markets competing. LOT will be starting a 2nd daily flight next summer so the market must be there, AA should also be able to feed via ORd just as well as UA can. Will JFK-BCN or JFK-MXP be a better use for the 767?

AA has been serving ORD-FRA for 20 years or so, and has been in the market longer than UA. ORD-NRT is supported with codewhore feed from JAL. There's also enough traffic in those markets to support three carriers, which isn't the case with WAW. JFK-BCN/MXP might be a better market because there's probably more tourism to those locations than there is to the former Warsaw Pact locations, which is predominantly VFR traffic (visiting friends & relatives).
