Does US have to provide the employees with water? in my station at least for the last 4 yrs they provided us with bottled water and gatorade. this summer we have had oppressive heat waves that started in the spring, out mgmt refuses to give us water yet we have water fountains that are both dirty and non working. an employee called osha and all they told them was that as long as the fountain is there thats enough. its pathetic how we are treated.

Robbed I agree, Here they don't provide bottled water only some one riding around on a Cushman with water & that's if you see them. Quite frankly(at least in my work area ) there are days I never see any one.

Why aren't you just carrying your own water in a canteen? Bring an empty vessel from home (or two), fill-up the water behind the check point, and leave it in a break room refrigerator so it is available when you have a flight to work. You can't bring water to the gate and leave it on the aircraft tug? Better yet, wash the canteen at work, and leave it empty in your locker for the next day.

So Recommends Jester.

It goes without saying that drinking fountain cleanliness is not an osha issue. The water can come directly from a sewer, for all they care. It isn't a safety issue because you could bring your own. Your management should get on airport's maintenence operations and tell them to 'fix the problem.

It's obvious that cost cuts will affect both pax and workers. I bring my own water, or know where I could get cheap drinks at my a/p. Even the airlines have cheaper than vending machine prices.

In conclusion, unless your miles from water, no company is obligated to supply you. You can always drink from the a/p kettle fountain

I guess you folks aren't stationed in California, CAL OSHA states that all employers are to provide cool potable water, available at all times, to all employees. This isn't a direct qoute from the code of reg's, but I think everyone gets the point. FYI, you can go online to OSHA & look up the work conditions for your state.

just my 2 cents worth... stay safe

Ask a flight attendant for bottled water if you're not getting what you need. I hand out H2O all the time for my co workers on the ramp.

We can't have you passing out in this horrible heat and humidity. And it's going to be another long hot summer and fall.

Thank you! Glad someone cares about ramp people 🙂

Just as long as managment doesn't see it!

Exactly right, I don't want to put anyone is a bad position in saying, "No," or because Management might be watching as it is a policy to the contrary. Not to say I haven't accepted when offered, but I won't put anyone on the spot either.

So Reasons Jester.

Does your station have any incentive money in their account? Of course, if you had money for last year its gone since it had to be spent by June, but if you have money this year and enough people want it, ask your manager to set up some kind of bottled water supply (like the 5 gal jug kind). You can use the incentive money to benefit all the station workers and if the airport provided fountains are nasty and enough agents want the bottle water they should be able to get it for you guys unless there's something else you want to spend it on.

* How many people actually know if they have money in their stations incentive fund? If you are curious pm me and I'll find out for you. I know there are some stations where management isnt discussing this fund, but its money the station has earned and should be spent on the agents needs in the station.

In the words of Capt Reneault in "Casablanca": I am shocked, shocked!

Affording water to employees should NOT be an issue. It really is not a factor in the budget that is going to make or break the airline. It is a necessity for employees, plain and simple. We have a reverse osmosis filter tap in our breakroom, thankfully, and it is pretty clean! If it were not there, I would certainly get resourceful as to how to keep myself hydrated on the ramp.

I have refrained from comment on this because it will look like I'm Pro-Company.

I will wager that if the ramp saw what it would cost to supply the ramp with bottled water, you folks would tell the company "You know what? Buy some 5 gallon Igloo cooler and some ice and keep them filled". The cost is staggering.

For 23 years I've been a crew chief for the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival. In terms of heat and hydration we have similar working conditions as the avg Ramper. So I am aware of the issues and how important hydration is. For years we had a water sponsor and the crew water was free so it wasn't an issue. Due to the recession our water sponsor cut way way back and is no longer sponsoring events. So that meant we had to buy bottled water. Event wide we have a staff of about 500 over a 5 day period.

I took a look at the bills and the cost would gag Linda Lovelace. Now we rent 2 additional golf carts, bought 25 coolers fill then with ice and well water from the site and we cut the cost to less than half.

I understand that bottled water for in-flight beverage service costs more per serving than soft drinks. (The bottle water craze, in addition to being wasteful and environmentally unfriendly, has to be one of the greatest consumer rip-offs ever)

(You're dating yourself, Sparrow. Some of the readers may have to ask their parents who Linda Lovelace is. )
