What's new

1,700 layoffs announced

The sky is falling..... the sky is falling....... NOT

Who else in the industry has a $15 first bag fee besides US? Oh, only some little carriers named AA and UA.

Oh, and who will quickly flock to the $2 soda idea? Probably AA, UA, DL, and NW.

Eventually, all of the legacy carriers will be in lock step with ala carte fees. Heck, Spirit has been charging for sodas for at least 6 months, and their business model has not been adversely affected.

Those who are calling for a mass exodus of US customers are barking up the wrong tree. Get over it and understand that ala carte is here to stay and will not send customers packing.
America West was the first to test meals for sale. They did not implement it first, but look at what's out there now. Everyone has meals for a fee.

Things are changing, and there's no going back.

We can only hope your right there Timmy.........

I guess the next industry leading innovation from the AZ dynamic duo is to make every employee an independent contractor effective August 1st. That way Tempe can get out of having to continue paying employee insurance and benefits to be more competitive.

Current Pilots will have to apply for the newly developed scheduling system and will be required to wet lease aircraft by the hour and also now provide flight instruction for the new "Pay to be a F/O program" in cooperation with the newly announced Rio Salado Flight School Academy and Maricopa County Middle School.

August Lines will now be handed out via a lottery and will conducted by our newest codeshare partner: Greyhound

Routes that are no longer served by air will be operated by our newest addition to the US Airways fleet: The Greyhound RBJs (Regional BUS junkwagons). Affected and furloughed pilots can apply for Captain positions after paying a nominal charge to the company and attending training (training cost and accommodations are the responsibility of the individual) Positions will be on a first come first serve basis. More details TBA.

Time clocks will be installed on the aircraft for Flight Attendants, Catering, and Below the wing operations. These independent contractors will now be compensated under the pay as you work model. We will also be offering the details of our newly announced AERA plan.

Airline Employees "Reducation" Act (Reduction and Re-Education) sponsored by WalMart and EBay.

Stay Tuned.

Get used to it..... YEAH Right.

Are you sure about that? The following is an excerpt from a communication from the Spirit ALPA rep to all Spirit pilots...

"Greetings fellow Spirit pilots,

At 1744 EDT Friday evening our Vice President of Operations, Jeff Carlson, sent facsimile copies of three certified letters to ALPA President Capt. John Prater. These letters were notices pursuant to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN). Spirit Airlines gave the minimum required legal notice of potential base closings in LGA and SJU, and of a potential reduction in base size in FLL. Capt. Creed, upon hearing of the notices, spoke directly with Ben Baldanza. Ben indicated Spirit would be finalizing decisions concerning these bases in the next week, and merely wanted to have the legal notification in play for that eventuality.

Under the WARN Act the Company is required to provide an accurate number of those employees who could be affected by these types of decisions. Spirit has indicated 242 pilots are exposed to displacement or furlough. We hope their plan includes the growth of other bases but it's hard to imagine the economic benefit of such realignment in these times of cost control."

Another post in the same thread said "Spirit may lay off or move up to 60 percent of its flight attendants and 45 percent of its pilots in an effort to cut costs and deal with soaring fuel prices, according to letters released Tuesday by union leaders."

Granted, you can't say that charging for sodas caused this, but you also can not say that is has had no effect.

You definitely haven't paid for mine with all due respect.....don't worry ole John McCain has your back.

I do thank every East Pilot I see.....actually you should too. They are the reason you got (although probably the last) profit sharing checks.

Ummm... Spirit announce last week that they would furlough 60% of their FA's and 40% of their pilots.

better idea: why not take out the ovens in the back since we dont serve meals anymore, may be put the pillows and blankets in there and sell them for 5 bucks a piece.
Leave the ovens in, sell heated pillows and blankets for ten bucks.

The best hate mail in this case would be the unsent and uncommunicated type, like taking one's business elsewhere and not say or write a thing.
As Piney says, it should not be the complaints that should worry one. It is when it gets quiet that one should start worrying.

Hello? Anyone?

Do you all know that the company has absolutely NO IDEA on how they are going to charge for soft beverages? They know they needed to implement this knee jerk idea but have NO IDEA on how they are going to do it. Inventory every soda on every mainline jet? NOT IN A MILLION YEARS! ! ! Also as for taking inventoried soda on your overnight......I use 3 for a long overnight so that will be 3 comped to the cute guy. Sorry this isn't gonna fly all that well.

Oh and for making change and driving the f/a's crazy.....If I don't get change for your $20.00 bill you get the soda for free. 😉 Not gonna stress MEEEE out. Oh and if we are close to landing and we don't finish.....Oh well. Sooooooorrrrryyyyyyyy. Maybe next flight. I WILL NOT apologize for this during flight nor will I WORK MY TAIL OFF to get a service done due to sales. Not gonna happen. Until they have cashless handheld units people will be paying with 5, 10 and 20 dollar bills. Not gonna happen.

Oh and when we DO go cashless and have handheld units do ya all know that there will be ONE UNIT used for the service? Both f/a's on the cart selling but ONE unit for both of you to use? MORONS

Sorry this place is going down the tubes and working at a fast food restaurant DOES look to be a bit better than working for an airline contrary to what FREEDOM the biggest management kiss up has to say about it. I understand the industry is in trouble but look at all the cutting and cutting and cutting US has done and the pay we all receive yet we STILL are doing this bad relative to the fuel crisis? C'mon folks management is aware and not sure how they are gonna pull this off. They are grabbing at straws. SINKING SHIP....SINKING SHIP! ! ! 🙄

Why don't these airlines just take the ovens and galley carts off and replace them with vending machines? Changes are coming. The sky is falling.

Oh, and these "handheld units" will cost $$$, plus training class costs. Wouldn't it be cheaper to just put a cheap calculator from the Dollar Tree on every cart?

Why don't we just raise ticket prices and include the soda and pretzels??
There are only so many seats that the discount carriers have and then if the public wants to fly they will have to take the other carriers like ours and pay the higher fare. period.
The idea of trying to make change for all the $20 bills for a $2 soda on a 55 minute flight on a 321 is making me scream PLEASE, PLEASE--offer a voluntary furlough ---it's time for me to take a break from this hell house !!!

They cannot raise ticket prices when Southwest (mainly) won't raise it to the price that is needed to become profitable.

I am not saying I agree with these fees.....HOWEVER, unless people are living under a rock, they will have to deal with it.

The airlines are in TROUBLE!!!!

I couldn't agree more. I WILL NOT inventory anything. This reminds me of the cold stone creamery coupons that everyone refused to pass out. The east will not put up with this. What happens on the "newly wed, nearly dead" flights to pbi, where you have 35 people needing a glass of water to take a pill during boarding? Are we charging them on the ground or do we tell them they should have brought their own water? Do they get a can for 2 bucks or just a glass? How about those big water bottles? 2 Bucks for a glass of water? This place is crazy! No one is running this airline at all. These guys have been looking for a merger partner but no one wants us. Whose going to want to merge with us now? We are the laughing stock of the industry.
