AA grounds the sp80 fleet....

Ummm, the feds didn't ground the 80 fleet. AMR did it themselves.

Or am I reading this wrong?

The FAA was apparently performing spot inspection at DFW and were yanking the planes out of service one by one yesterday afternoon. Apparently AA decided to ground the whole fleet voluntarily after the Feds threatened to it themselves.

NYTimes said:
American had inspected the wiring bundles and thought it had the problem fixed two weeks ago. But the F.A.A., upon looking at the planes earlier this week, found some bundles were wrapped and attached to the wheel wells incorrectly, and ordered them redone.

According to the NYTimes, it wasn't a voluntary pulldown of the planes. The FAA demanded that the wire bundle wraps and attachment were done incorrectly and ordered them redone.

But, But, But....Doesn't QA sign off on the original ECO prototype?

The upper echelons of QA do approve the ECO's. So,Yes QA does have a hand in this as well as allowing the RII program to get out of control. There were protests by the lower QA managers about this ECO being RII only and now a major disaster has occurred. I'm sure there will be some vacancies in upper QA management real soon.

Kida, they'll just play musical management as always - none of the problem children ever go away; they just get reassigned (very much like the feds).

AMERICAN AIRLINES MANAGEMENT PRESS CONFERENCE at 2:30est/1:30cst.

--Just an update... now more than 1100 flights cancelled today according to CNBC.
--CNBC reports that the FAA acknowledges this is not a "safety of flight issue" but a compliance issue.
--AMR stock down 10%.

But you know this has got to effect AA's bottom line! Which will indirectly effect all our negotiations!

Ya think? MCI, my prediction is that AMR files a Ch 11 petition soon and Bob Owens will finally get to see what happens to wages, benefits and work rules in bankruptcy.

A bankruptcy filing will permit AA to rid itself of many of these problem MD-80s as well as allow it to conserve its cash.

This is gonna result in perhaps 2,000 or more canceled flights this week and perhaps an additional $80 - $100 million loss. And I'd look for reduced bookings going forward unless AA rolls out the huge fare sales/mileage promos. And huge fare sales to recaputer customers is just gonna accelerate the losses.

Sorry to repeat myself, but does anyone know how many a/c passed re-inspection without additional modifications?

Or better yet, how many are actually flying? Meaning didn't need fixin or already repaired.

Im sure most of you remember when Alaska Airlines put one in the Pacific killing a bunch of people because of a 'jack screw' issue on the 80, yet the aircraft was'nt grounded.

NOPE they had to be inspected in a short time constraint, yet the aircraft type was'nt grounded! Why is this?

...We're grounding planes for a Non-Safety issue?

A reason to ground

I wondered that also - I've a bad feeling about the timing. AA seems to be unnaturally submissive when facing such a steep 2-4 day revenue loss unless it was a "you set 'em down or we will" deal of sorts.

In this particular instance, I'll agree with FWAAA (call the Pope - see if hell froze over) - this may be the set-up. Some aircraft and associated problems go away along with three union contracts (I wonder how working together will sound then).

Watch out after the 15th (Bone-us time) and pay attention to the daily cash burn.

Im looking forward to the continued 'working together, shared sacrfice' charade!

FURP 😀

Anybody catch Dan Garton's apology at the press conference?

Wasn't on the networks, but it was carried live by some of the DFW area tv station websites.

But in any case bring it on

Somebody tell me why the hell the VP of friggin advertising was making the apology and not the CEO/President??

How insulting to every customer, how insulting to every employee. If you run the show the buck stops with you, if you can't face the music for what you've done, then you don't belong in your position, and you're just a rat-bAAstard!

Would someone please just get it over with and fire that glorified baggage handler already???

Wing, tell us how you really feel about Arpey. 😀

I just assumed that Garton was gonna be the new VP of maintenance and his first assignment was apologizing for this debacle.
