Afa leaders should release a statement and put MS Teddy on air, rebuke the slackers that caused this mess ..... AFA has a responsiblity to scold the abusers. If AFA and IAM doesnt do this, it further tarnishes the already bad image that unions have today! To sit back and watch the blatent abuse is just as bad as saying we support it. If these people want more money, and holidays off, then quit and find a job that does just that! Im outraged that we all do the same job, and all are in the same boat, yet a few have managed to slam us right into the ground. MS XIDAS open your mouth and speak something positive for a change.. I m not interested in excuses. Im not interested in morale or the lack of it. Thousands of us are all in the same boat, yet we chose not to abuse the sick time. These people should be FIRED, and every good employee who follows the rules, should make themselves heard. Write AFA AND IAM and tell them you want JUSTICE!!!!!!!! I want this company to survive, we have some control over that, AND THIS IS SOME OF IT!

Union representatives insisted, though, that chronic understaffing by the bankrupt airline was to blame, rather than any stealth job action by disgruntled employees.

"We are so short staffed, if there is spit on the runway in Philadelphia, it causes a fiasco," said Teddy Xidas, president of the Pittsburgh chapter of the Association of Flight Attendants. "Any mishap or bump in the road causes a disaster. It's just the nature of operations there."

Molly McCarthy, the president of the union's Philadelphia local, acknowledged that there was a spike in the number of people who called in sick but denied that it was much worse than other holiday seasons.

"There's not a major corporation or airline out there that doesn't have an increase in sick calls over the holidays, sometimes for no other reason than it's flu season," she said. "But other airlines had people call out sick, and didn't have these problems."

The last holiday staffing crisis for US Airways came in 2001, when the airline was forced to cancel almost 200 flights, including 125 on Christmas Day, because too many flight attendants called in sick.
 
It will never happen. Unions are either using busy holiday travel periods for negotiating leverage via the threat of a strike, or deflecting the reason if situations such as this occur. It will continue to occur as long as contract language permits or soundbites from the union paint it as expected behavior due to mgmt actions.

Or when the company ceases to exist...
 
Dell, im not afraid of working , nor of getting another job. What bothers me is the bs you spew..... 3/4's of what you say is bs, because you dont have what it takes to just leave after you complain constantly about the very place you seem to want to destroy! Do your self, us, and GOD most importantly, your family, and move on!
 
By now, we have all seen the reports on the news about the operation of our airline over this past holiday weekend, and how that operation failed miserably. This was caused, unfortunately, by a minority of employees who appear to have decided to take some type of action against the Company.

AFA in no way supports any member who calls in sick unless that person is actually sick. There are serious consequences to any such action and those consequences are outlined in our Agreement. Sadly, the employees who took this action may ultimately cause the failure of the airline. Passengers who are angry over having their entire holiday weekend ruined will avoid flying on our airline. At a time like this, where we need to retain the customer base we have and build upon it, the bad publicity the airline received will not benefit any of us.

Many of you volunteered to fly trips. Many of you doubled up to help out in this situation. AFA and the Company appreciate those of you who did that. Your efforts helped the Company get through this holiday weekend. Sadly, those of you who worked additional trips did so because many of your fellow co-workers thought it was within their rights to call in sick.

AFA would like to recognize all the employees who acted responsibly this weekend - those of you who reported for work as scheduled and those of you who volunteered. Thanks.

So, Perry is blaming the "minority" of employees who did this and not management?

This is interesting..... smells like 'survivor island' to me.

Is it true that F/A's have a pretty clear idea of the 'type' or 'group' of people that are being blamed for calling off sick? Are these folks associated with a certain base or seniority rank? Could it be that these folks might be the logical, presumed target for the negative effects of the implementation of the TA?

I didn't say I thought it was management's fault, but others are saying that. I've been reading in posts and news articles that a small group of people could not be responsible for the havoc that was caused. I found it interesting that Perry doesn't agree and said that the people who did this could cause the airline to fail.
