Bears, as much fun as the Primary Season is, I think you're overlooking something fairly important...

Unlike TWU voters who voted no over a single issue they didn't like which amounted to perhaps 10% of the contract, when it comes to a general election, being 51% satisfied is usually enough.

I suspect with very few exceptions, all of the Gingrich, Perry, Bachman, Cain, and even Ron Paul voters will pull the lever for just about anyone who isn't Obama.

I am by no means a fan of Romney, but he can't be any worse than the socialist we've endured for the past three years. When faced with the better of two bad choices, "anyone but Obama" is going to be a fairly easy choice for moderates & independents.

Jimmy Carter must be quite relieved to know that he lived long enough to see another Democrat replace him as the least effective President of modern times....

I think Dog may actually be correct given the general apathy of the average citizen. Where it gets interesting is if we (Mistakenly I believe) take Military Action against Iran. Here's a plausible scenario that could unfold.

1. Iran keeps up with the Saber Rattling and threats. US and the UN press sanctions against Iran causing Iran's largely secular middle class closer to the government. This emboldens Ahmadinejad to keep the heat turns up.

2. Due to the above, gas continues to rise due to fear, uncertainty & doubt coupled with rampant speculation

3. The economy screeches to a halt and unemployment rises slowly but steadily causing great unrest. Public demonstrations take place in record numbers

4. The Republicans have no candidate with enough delegates pledged to win the nomination at the end of May.

5. Commandant Obama initiates force against Iran due to fuel prices and unrest. It is seen as a cynical act to win reelection and his numbers tank accordingly

6. Ron Paul exits the Republican Convention and announces a run for President on the Libertarian ticket. Anti-war sentiment within the Democratic party cause mass defections and we now have a 3 way race with each candidate holding about 33% in the polls

7. During the Iran/US hostilities the US loses an aircraft carrier in the conflict, thousands die or are wounded and the war begins to escalate as we roll into November with a tanked economy and yet another war.

Romney’s support among Republican voters has moved up to 83%, just about matching the president’s 84% support among Democrats. However, only six percent (6%) of GOP voters would vote for Obama if Romney is the nominee. Twice as many Democrats (12%) would cross party lines to vote for Romney. The former governor of Massachusetts also has an eight-point advantage among unaffiliated voters.

If Rick Santorum is the Republican nominee, he is up by one point over the president, 45% to 44%. He receives 77% support from Republican voters and is up three among unaffiliateds. Santorum and Romney are the only Republican candidates to lead the president more than one time in the polls.
