Somebody mentioned LCC possibly acquiring used A340-500's from Air Canada, not sure if there's any truth to the rumor though. Anybody know when the DOT rules on the route?

It is my understanding US Airways is in the final stages of revising its Airbus widebody order, which will now likely include A330s, A340s, and A350s. Expect the order to be announced within weeks.

In addition, US Airways is discussing a narrowbody order with both Boeing and Airbus for B737 and B757 replacement aircraft.

Regards,

USA320Pilot

i hope US gets the AC A340s, and i hope narrowbody goes boeing, since US has to many A319/320/321s. 777s would be nice

Well, it would be "nice". But it would add mx and crew costs to add a new type to the fleet. I suspect the narrowbodies will continue to be the 319/320/321 variants.

Spoke with one of our V.P.'s the other day who said we are not looking at major new market expansion right now. We're trying to mange the routes we currently have. If we can get China, that would be great but no big new international routes in the near future, other than planned expansion in Europe.

so PHL-TLV and PHX -FRA are not going to happen i suppose
so if they get the AC now and then they dont get the route....what would they do with the AC then ?

May use the A340 on the Athen route, so won't have to be weight restricted.

Would it be feasible to fly (Example Only) PHL-MXP-ATH-MXP_PHL? Make ATH route a one stop flight? Or TLV? But won't TLV require 2 aircraft anyway?

This would require further authority from Italy to do something like this. The rights that airlines hold are very complicated and convoluted.

Here's a summary of how these various rights are named and conceptualized. It's mind boggling:

I seriously doubt we'd add a 4-holer to our wide body fleet, it doesn't really make alot of sense right now. And besides, the A340-500 is designed specifically for ultra long haul ops. US Airways doesn't currently have a need for this type of aircraft, unless of course they suddenly decide to start flying to Sydney, Singapore, Bangkok or Beijing. What US Airways does need is an A330 with uprated engines and more range. Or maybe...just maybe a 787 order...which I believe is the perfect size aircraft for US Airways.

PBI...
I would agree w/ you if it weren't for the Sandcastle's stated intention to apply for a China route. It's hard to make an application w/o an aircraft that can actually reach the destination. The planes that make the most sense for US-China routes are B777, A340 & B747. Of that group, the A340 makes the most sense, short-term, since it would be easiest to integrate into the current US fleet. If US backs away from its plans to apply for a China route, then the A330/A350 or B787 would make the most sense, long term.

We know about the rumor of the 2 AC A340-500's US may be looking at, but I have to wonder what else is on the market in this class of aircraft? How many used 747-400's are parked in the dessert? If they could get their hands on more then just 2 at a good price it may make the cost of having them worth while and open up more then just China. I doubt there is any 777's just sitting around, but it may be worth investigating to see.

From what I remember the only 777's that are avalible are some 777-200A's which dont have much more if any range over the 330-300

Edit...
