Update for May 8, 2007

“The pilots must take charge of our futureâ€

Dear Philadelphia pilots,

We are fully engaged. You need to be also. You know what must be done. You can’t have us fight this one for you by proxy! Get busy……no more excuses.

From our friends in Pittsburgh:

Council 94 Update - May 8, 2007

Ladies and Gentlemen of Council 94:

We share your absolute outrage with the seniority award! The MEC shares your utter disbelief that any rational explanation exists for the arbitration outcome. As we write this the MEC just completed a special meeting called to research alternatives, and plan how we will proceed. ALPA president, Captain John Prater, spent over three hours with us on Sunday hearing the overview of the gross inequities of this award. We detailed to Capt. Prater the loss of jobs, upgrades, wages, and working conditions the US Airways pilots suffered due to the windfall gained by America West pilots.

The MEC has charged the Merger Committee with compiling a presentation to be given to Capt. Prater and the Executive Council within the next two weeks. We saw an overview of the highlights on Monday. The committee will not retry the arbitration case with the Executive Council; they will present evidence of the inequities of the award and the detriments to the careers of the US Airways pilots. It is our opinion that the award violates the principals of ALPA merger policy.

The MEC believes that the Executive Council has the authority to intervene in this situation. Your Pittsburgh reps believe that the pilots must take charge of our future.

· Call Captain Prater’s office to express your outrage with this situation.

· Call the Executive Council, let them know we need their help in solving the problems created by this outrages award.

The Presidents office can be reached by calling the main ALPA number: 888-FLY-ALPA, dial 0 for the operator and ask for Capt. Prater’s office. The Executive Council can receive messages through the ASPEN system, also available at the main number.

The MEC also passed a resolution stopping the merger assessment as of April 15, 2007. There is a sufficient balance in our merger fund to pay the current merger expenses and the expected cost of the Executive Council presentation.

You have received our recent letter urging each of us to remain focused on the task at hand. We want to remind all pilots of their obligation to under the FAR regarding operating aircraft. If you feel you are unable to fly safely due to the distraction and stress created by this seniority award contact Steve Javaras (317) 844-2742, or ALPA Aeromedical at (303) 341-4435. We have our EAP available through United Behavioral Health at (800) 363-7190, be sure to coordinate contacts with Steve Javaras. Due to the distractions and stress created with the Nicolau award, the MEC has temporarily suspended strike prep activities. We want to reexamine our priorities without the additional complications of planning SPC events. We intend to reengage our picketing campaign at the appropriate time.

The Joint Negotiating Committee will receive the company’s contract proposal this week. They will spend time analyzing the offer and report to the MEC. We will keep you advised of developments as the negotiating process moves forward.

Once again, we understand and share your anger. Your reps ask you to remain focused and give your union the time necessary to reach a solution. Follow our rational approach, DO YOUR JOB!!! Do not let your anger distract you; if you feel that you need an outlet of some kind contact the resources we have available.

As always call with questions or comments.

This is from the East Merger Commitee introduction to their rank and file on July 16, 2005:

ALPA Merger Policy makes no mention of date of hire or any other method of achieving these goals. The Merger Representatives must determine which method or combinations of methods best meet the goals. The goals all address what your seniority will buy upon integration and into the future. This is the yardstick of fairness by which any proposed method of integration must be judged...

This process without a doubt can be divisive, both between the pilot groups and within the pilot groups. When the integration process is complete, we need to be able to move forward with one pilot group that is as unified as possible. When it is all said and done, we can become one formidable group of pilots.

When you meet America West pilots, be as welcoming as you can. Remember that the seniority list integration will not be accomplished in the jumpseat, the crewroom, web boards or the hotel van. Trust the process and trust your merger team to do the very best job we can in protecting the best interests of all US Airways pilots.
