Any plans for a China application?

For Sh's and giggles, US should apply for PHX-PVG, but say the aircraft will come from DL once the merger is complete.

Current Delta put in an application for ATL-PVG for the next round of China allocations. I can't remember if future Delta, I mean US Airways, applied last time they were eligible (2006). If not, would US apply now that they have a west coast hub? I know the A330s don't have the legs, but I was curious whether you all think US will put in a token application or not.
I saw already about two weeks ago on a DOT site request from US AIRWAYS to start schedule services from any point in US to Hong Khong ... They are really thinking about China flights .
Buy the way January 17-th US AIRWAYS placed request to DOT for flights to Buenos Aires in Argentina and Montevideo in Uruguay .

This is probably so they can codeshare with UA, not their own service ... that's my guess anyway.

Why think about China when LCC can't manage to give decent service to Hawaii?

Presumably China flights would have lots of business people on them. This doesn't fit with the new USAirways' plan that tries to pi$$ off the business traveller.

NFW I'd fly to China on US when there are other carriers with comfortable seats and a real FC.

Yes, I agree. If US had China (or any other Far East) service, they have to get the cabin configuration right before offering to fly the route. Otherwise it becomes a non-rev free-for-all when it goes out with a load of less than 50%.

Can you say, "Stockholm this past summer"?

Thanks for the links. Looks like it's an extension of a previous application. Do we have available aircraft to start service?
I've heard we are getting A330-200 from SWISS . at least 5 of them . If I am not mistaken they can make it to MVD or EZE nonstop . TAM Brazil flying them JFK-GRU or LHR / CDG / MXP- GRU nonstop .I think NW going on A332 also to Japan and China from Seattle ... So they have Longrange and can make it from PHX to HKG ???? What do you think ??

Since the thread on US announcing their intentions to apply for a China frequency this year got closed, I thought I would bump this one to the top.

So this is going to be PHL-PVG or PEK, with aircraft that are not on order as of yet?

I don't think US has a chance of winning this round, but should at least put forth a formal application so that next time they are eligible in a few years they can submit a legit application and possibly win.

The DOT will probably not take the application seriously because of the timing. If I were on the panel deciding, I would figure it's all just sour grapes over the failed Delta buyout and an opportunity to throw a monkey wrench into Delta's bid for the authority. Additionally, as the DOT panel member, it would be blatently obvious that USAirways can't be at all serious since they don't have the airplanes to accomplish the task, none are on order, and nothing in that regard has been announced.

When is this decision gonna be made? There is time to do something. Getting a route to China wouldn't start until Spring of 2008, and would get rewarded to the airline by january 2008. In 10 months I would believe that they would be able to scrape up some leased widebodies. If they need a new certificate, how long does that take? There is time, that is one thing on US side.
