Josh--

IMO, it's disingenuous at best for a company to sell a base rate increase as a "raise" when they know it will be more than offset- or negated- being increases in other employee-borne costs.

For a union to try and peddle a T/A doing the same with the mantra that it "puts a little cash in the members' pockets" is just as bad. It's intellectually lazy, but it *is* an easier sell than either telling the whole story, or fighting for a better overall compensation package.

In order to fight for a better overall package the union must have the overwhelming support of the membership. If the membership lacks this solidarity and resolve then it is clear they are satisfied with a little cash in their pockets and to hell with the rest of the language in the CBA. My case in point... was our last disgraceful strike vote. You gain only what you are willing to fight for. When you point an accusing finger at the union and the respective negotiating committee the remaing three point to yourself. Improvements in wage, benefits, job protection from outsourcing, vacation, sick leave, safety, shift differencial and seniority protection in the event of a merger or acquisition will never be achieved without the backing of a solidified membership. It's very simple really. As long as the majority of members are only concerned with themselves and the hourly rate of pay we will continue to be swept out with the tide. You get what you deserve Brothers and Sisters. IMO... true leadership will awaken this sleeping dog. If we could stick together we could accomplish much more. It is long overdue and it is time.

Truth.

Reigniting the resolve of the membership will only come with true leadership. Business as usual will lead to the same tired results.
This is the challenge and expected result of the re elected DL 141 leadership team. They have been in office for four years and have been graciously re elected. They have promised sweeping change. Time wil tell if they deliver. In the meantime and in the best interest of the membership I am hopeful they deliver and support their cause. Subsequently, as a dues paying member, it is fair to expect positive change and results.
