Yes, I know the same poll is running over in the HP forum, but it might be interesting to if the results are different here. "Cactus" is outpolling "US Air" on that poll.
If are going to suggest a new call sign, keep in mind the new ICAO guidelines:

One or two syllables only.
The word "Air" cannot be part of the call sign.

Anything but listening to "You Ess Airs...XXX" in a pissed-off, gravely voice!

If "air" can't be part of the call sign, why is US "AIR" a choice?

Because it is the already existing call sign. The two syllable limit and "no air" apply to new call signs under new ICAO guidelines. Even before the latest rule change, ICAO preferred to keep call signs short; AFIK that is why US still uses "US Air". ICAO would not approve "US Airways".

The following website has a list of all signs - some from airlines that are no longer with us. Some are humorous by intent, a cargo outfit uses/used "Ugly Van" (a Shorts 330 operator?).

Or the humour is not by intent; did get a chuckle out of the call sign for Faucett of Peru. I think they are no longer around, so someone could inherit "Charlie Foxtrot". We could start a whole new thread for a nomination! :D

Reasons why "CACTUS" is a good call sign choice:

It's a real word found in standard english dictionaries
It's a visual thing that will aid in calling, I'd suspect... controllers will naturally visualize a flying cactus
It's funny cuz it's so improbable
It contains the letters U and S in sequence
It has historical and cultural connection to the legacy of the combined carrier
It has a sense of place (of being from SOMEWHERE... like 'Piedmont')
It's a symbol of a highly adapted life form that thrives in hostile and difficult environments.
It's highly associated with the United States (obviously the American west)

Why not just leave it as is "USAir" since that's the company's name....

No. The company name is USAirWAYS! USAir disappeared back in '96 under Steven Wolf's tour of duty.

Just as there is no "American West" as so many media sources err.

Cactus does NOT reflect an East Coast operation. Its not reflective of the new USAirways.
