I am wondering.... I am going to ride jumpseat to London... Do I have to pay
taxes or aren't I part of the crew at that point if I ride jumpseat??

Thanks for your response...

As far as I remember, yes you would be responsible for the taxes. You see, USAirways pays the taxes on the 'working' crewmembers. You, however would not be considered working for tax purposes.

Before the AWA "wunderkind" management team takeover....... you would have been considered part of the crew (if in uniform) but now Tempe wants to make sure YOU dreadful employees and your family pay for your "so-called" benefits.

So now along with your parents paying to be left at the gate (by a new hire agent), you are NO LONGER permitted to be put on the General Declaration (GenDec) with the crew (unless a pilot) and ARE SUBJECT to TAXES and FEES and best of all going through customers with the rest of the passengers.

There was a list floating around with the taxes due for each leg or segment. Might be on "the hub" if it is even working.

Do yourself a favor and buy a ZED fare on another airline going to europe.....unless you are willing to pay to be abused. WOW - Just thought of a possible new revenue stream for Tempe.........

I am ever loathe to defend Tempe, but the taxes on jumpseat riders was always the burden of the jumpseat rider....long before Tempe was in the picture. Crystal City never paid jumpseaters' taxes for them. Only non-working DH on company business was allowed on the GenDec and got a free ride.

(Of course, that doesn't mean that some did it on the sly and, though playing with fire, did not get burned. But it was never policy for non-company business jumpseaters to go on the GenDec.)

nybusdriver is correct - US charges jumpseaters the int'l taxes. Not every airline does (UA didn't the couple of times I rode their J/S to Europe), so you may want to shop around if other carrier's J/S is available to you.

Well, it might not have been CCY's "policy" to pay taxes for the employee while riding on the the J/S - Guess the agents upheld the policy like:

Not Chewing Gum In Uniform.

It is definitely their policy NOW.

I do know that many a pilot and F/A rode the jump seat to circumvent paying to upgrade to Envoy or First if a seat was available. Trust me, after paying taxes and upgrades just to bring my wife on an 55 hr RON - I now know why... It's not worth it. Also I think the UK has some kine of "Luxury Tax" that they charge you if you plan on upgrading. If memory serves correctly: 25 pounds sterling ...so about $35.

I know quite a few individuals that commuted from Europe mainly via the jump seat
and were NEVER NOT put on the GEN DEC or charged for taxes.

So I guess they and I, were lucky and I stand corrected.

As another option:

My wife flies for DAL - and I do know for a fact that they do not (well as of last year 12/08) charge you for taxes while riding the J/S or flying non revenue. Although they do have a pretty limited schedule over to Europe....just kidding. 🙄 They go pretty much everywhere in the world out of JFK.

DAL Business Elite is a pretty nice ride on the 777 and 76.....It loathes me to say it - they blow US away......and they were even nice.

Hope that helps.

If I recall, there is no international JS tax for the outbound leg. However, you will have to pay the tax on the return leg before you depart the US (at least on Airways) unless you can show the gate agent a ticket (ZED, ID90) that you have on hand to return to the US (since taxes will already have been paid on that ticket).

So FYI : 1) you will pay the same taxes on a ZED fare, plus some misc fees and 2) You can JS on Delta and they will sit you in first class if there is a seat open. They've always been great to JS on. The only advantage to a ZED fare is that you will board prior to a jumpseater. But it will cost you.

Taxes from ZRH exceed $50. If you pay the tax overseas, some stations require that you pay in cash in local currency. London did in the late 90s, not sure now. So it's probably easier to pay before you leave the US. Make sure you keep the receipt to show to the ticket counter in London.

UA may not charge you before you leave the US, but they will in London.

Have fun!

Riding jumpseat to get a free upgrade is totally besides the point of the departure taxes. The free jumpseat upgrade is a contractual obligation in the pilot and flight attendant contracts (east, at least.)

Again, if a jumpseat rider is placed on the GenDec to avoid the taxes, getting caught would not be pretty for the jumpseater, the person who put their name on the GenDec, or the captain of the flight. The company may turn a blind eye on a lot of stuff, but avoiding taxes has some serious ramifications that the company does not want to endure...and the fallout might be quite painful.

If I recall, there is no international JS tax for the outbound leg.

While relatively minor, there is a $16 "International Travel Tax" charged by the U.S. going and coming. From the various posts, whether J/S riders (non-working) pay the fees or not seems to depend on the agent. Personally, I've been charged both ways by US agents and neither way by UA agents.

Wow, bitter much? Those riding in the jumpseat for non-business reasons SHOULD pay taxes. Why is it fair for employees that don't have access to the jumpseat to pay taxes, but not other employees? And why should parents not have to pay a very small fee? They don't work for the company. They still get an excellent benefit, meaning travel at a very low price.

So you would rather pay a ZED fare ..where you have to pay both that fare AND the taxes, rather than pay JUST taxes?

And not ride the jump seat on US and fly DAL or UA??? Answer to both your question in one word: YES
And you always have the ability to access the jump seat....just get hired on as a pilot or flight attendant, then have your pension robbed, give up your work rules, working 40% more for 30% less, etc etc etc.....then you're welcome to it. Welcome.

Oh Yeah!!!!!!
