It can be done in a courteous way... "Please pass remaining service items, unwanted reading material, and any items you don't plan to take with you to the flight attendants as they pass through the cabin." It can be done without being rude.

It's my understanding that JetBlue makes a very to the point but professional announcement stating something along the lines of....

"Ladies and Gentleman we ask your cooperation in helping us turn this aircraft for our next flight. Please pass all unwanted service items, reading materials and refuse to the center isle for collection. Please check around your seat area and the seat pockets for any items you wish to discard. This will help the next flight depart OnTime and help us continue to offer you timely service with low fares"
