Gas Prices -- the Cause

I'm not wrong. You are wrong. I'm not saying that what you're saying wouldn't be nice and what not but it's simply not going to happen.

You are looking for a socialist welfare state. Our Constitution makes that very difficult to achieve. This country can not enact major social change quickly because of the enormous, intentional difficulty of amending the Constitution. Socialist Welfare states don't have things like the right to bear arms, freedom of speech, assembly, etc. that are as iron-clad as they are in the United States. Enacting social change of this magnitude would require many rights to be done away with or at least suspended for an extended period of time in order to quash any opposition that might pop up. You see, large governments don't like people opposing them. Our country guarantees many rights that make change difficult to achieve.

Perhaps you should stage a Constitutional Convention and attempt to overthrow the government.

There is still a sizable number of people who do NOT have cars nor do they need them. Driving is a luxury. Anyone can lead a car-free life if they're committed to it. I've made is abundantly clear that I'm not.

No I am not looking for a socialist welfare state. However I am looking for a state where the playing fields are more even between the rich and poor. Why would making sure that people have available jobs that one can make a living and secure basic needs result in taking away anyone's rights? In some parts of the country driving is a luxury but in most states it is not a luxury. Driving should be a luxury if we could get some of our tax dollars directed toward expanding our public transit system. How can you expect people who live in rural or suburban Ohio (just an example) to use a public transit system that is basically non existent? There are very few cities in our nation where public transportation infrastructure is addequate enough for people do depend on getting to work. I would love to park my car, that would save me hundreds a month on expenses but it would not be possible for me to get to work. There are no buses that come near my home. If we had a better transit system (which would create jobs building and operating it) then think of the money people who do not make much over minimum wage could have to spend on things they need or want which would create more jobs. Transportation and health care are high on my list of things I am looking for in my local and national leaders. I believe that there is a growing movement of people in our country who are not happy with the status quo anymore and they want something done. They are tired of the lip service that our politicians are giving us and if they vote for Obama and he does not deliver they will look for some other way to make their concerns heard. There is a grass roots change happening in our nation and the have nots are getting fed up. Once the genie is out of the bottle and the masses see that they have power in numbers I do not believe anyone will be able to put the genie back into the bottle. As always this is just my opinion.

Your argument makes zero sense. The power to create a military is one of the few things that Congress is explicitly given by the Constitution. As there are no private businesses that build highways or national parks (or the military, for that matter), I fail to see how that is "sticking its nose into people's lives".

Fine, you can have the military but I have seen plenty of private contractors for the roads and highways. Each city/county/state could build maintain it's own but it is far more efficient on a federal level. Parks are the same. As for the right sticking there nose where it does not belong see KC's post above.

I am not sure why when anyone thinks of government involvement it has too be government run. Why not regulation? Why not set regulations as to what an insurance company must offer? Set regulations as to what a hospital must offer?

OK, you're a socialist. Thank goodness the Constitution and most voters aren't.

Actually, I would bet most would meet your definition of a 'socialist' but do to the stigma that right puts on the term most will be afraid to admit it. Do you really believe that most people would be against having affordable medical care for all citizens? Given the number of people who have been foreclosed on and are unemployed who are having a hard time making ends meet, do you thnk they would be against having affordable medical care?

Do you think they would be against having affordable housing for those who have fallen on hard times?

Bless your heart! I remember seeing a movie once from the 1940's about people looking to create a state where the playing fields are more even between the rich and the poor. It was an interesting movie, although it was difficult to understand because it was all spoken in German.

Fed up with what? Opportunity?

Sorry, but I have no sympathy for the "have nots". Anyone can go to school or learn a trade.

How does the government or anyone for that matter make sure someone has a job?
CCC, WPA, TVA...the list goes on. Shoot...those programs even spawned many new private companies.

Sorry, but I have no sympathy for the "have nots"

We're all captialists until we find ourselves in need.

Maybe not...but define "affordable medicine"? Doctors decry "socialized medicine" because it would impact their earnings potential, but they don't seem to mind the very same thing happening when an insurance company does it. Example...I took my kid to a cardiologist in June..one hour visit, one EKG and one sonogram later - $1,800. Not bad for an hours work. Fortunately, I have private insurance and their agreement was to pay $800 for the service...with no balance billing to me. I guess they are hoping for someone with no insurance (or maybe a GOP "Health Savings Account") to pay the full $1,800.

No idea. What I do want is coverage that will not make me go broke to stay healthy. I currently do not have medical benefits covered by my employer. Assuming I stay where I am I will not have coverage for another 5 months. I cannot afford to go to a doctor for something other than catastrophic health issues and even then I will need to come up with $2500 to cover the deductible. Keep in mind if I am in the hospital for catastrophic health issues I probably will not be working. Should I have a heart attack or some other such issue and not have insurance I would probably end up at a county facility receiving questionable care. It surely will not be the equivalent of UCLA, Mayo, Lomalinda or some other such facility. My lack of financial resources should not dictate the quality of care that I receive.

What name you wish to give that kind of health care and the means by which it is achieved is irrelevant to me.

JS,

I do hope for your sake you never loose you job and you stay healthy all your life and that all you loved ones have the same such luck. Should you loose your job and your health coverage ... well .... I guess I will not care about that since you obviously do not. Mrs. Reagan did not care about stem cell research till her husband died from something that may possibly have been cured or possibly treated by the very thing she did not care about. I am sure most people do not care much about drunk drivers and the devastation they cause till one is a victim of a drunk.

Wow, just go to a trade school and get hired.... damn, why did I not think of that. I lost my job in April. Suffice to say it is not quite that easy and I will not waste my time trying to explain to a blind man what the color orange looks like. I do hope you are never in the situation that I have been in.

I've read the Constitution and the only true service that the Government is required to provide us, really, is the Postal Service (Article 1, Sec 8). There are a lot of other duties granted to them, but really the Post Office is it in the service department.

Nothing but the best! It's not good enough to get any old free medical care when you can't afford it... it has to be top-of-the-line!

Whatever happened to "beggars can't be choosers"?

Yes. Every citizen should be afforded the same quality medical care. My life is not more valuable than yours or vice-versa. That sports figure a few years back who was an alcoholic and got the transplant ahead of others is not more important due to the fact that he had money. Because someone can olny afford a county hospital where the staff many not be trained as well or have the latest equipment someone may not receive the best care and many die as a result. What happens if you just end up at a county hospital because that happens to be the closest to where your accident happened? Baylor may have been able to save your life but you went to Parkland where they were swamped and ... well .... you just did not make it .... so sorry. So yes. Evey hospital should be top notch and every person in this country should have access to affordable health care that befits the US or are there some people who just happen to more equal than others due to their status in life?

I am not asking for everyone to have a Rolls or a Porsche in the garage. Not everyone has to have a flat panel and a Blue Ray. I do believe that everyone is entitled to have a safe roof over their head, an education that can make the most of their ability, health care to keep them well, a job to be a productive member of society, and food in their stomach.

No one should have to beg for the basics of life.

It sounds like you just started a new position......did you by chance check out your options under the Cobra Act?

Repeat after me.....I am not a socialist....I am not a socialist....
