I'm just surprised that there hasn't been a Southwest-style service to Europe before now.

There most certainly was--two decades ago!
PeoplExpress started EWR-LGW in May 1983. Brussels was added in '85. Both lasted until the Texas Air (CO) takeover at the end of '86.

There used to be. It was called Laker. But BA did in Sir Freddie!

Sir Freddie did in Sir Freddie. When you come right down to it, once Freddie's fares were matched he just couldn't hack it.

I meant that I was surprised that one had not started up in the context of this post-9/11 "Fly me to the moon for $79 each way based upon r-t purchase some restrictions apply" environment. I am well aware that PeopleExpress and Laker used to exist--the operative phrase, is "used to."

JFK-LHR may be only 26 minutes longer then JFK-LGB but how much longer is LHR-JFK then LGB-JFK? About 2 and one half hours. IT's about four hour and forty five minutes from LGB-JFK but over seven from LHR - JFK.
