If this was a conservative, republican or anyone on the right the Dems and the MSM would have had a field day with this. But when a liberal says it.....crickets chirping. Go figure.

(Notice................. joanne feels that Not ALL folks from TX are closet racist's)
(I don't want "tech" going off of the deep end on me)

Isn't everyone a liberal but you?

I have watched Rather for quite some time. I have seen hi in interviews and read articles from him. I do not believe he is racist and I do not believe his comment had negative intent. When you grow up in a certain environment you take on traits from that area. A friend of mine grew up in TX and used the term "jewing down' in my presence. He had no idea what he had said until he saw me looking at him with amazement that he would say that. The look on his face was priceless. He is by no means antisemitic.

I have seen nothing to indicate that Rather is racist. In my opinion, his used a poor choice of words, nothing more.

Perfect example of what i was talking about. If this was said by someone on the right, Limbaugh, some Fox News anchor, etc., the left would be frothing at the mouth and screaming raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaacism!

But when a well known liberal says it, no problem, nothing to see here, move along....pathetic.

Well you certainly have proven a point many of us make in that the non stop "Political Correctness" is at best silly and at worst an insult to the intellegence of the average citizen.

I think it safe to say that Dan Rather is no more a racist than Barack Obama is.

Go back to the civil rights era and listen to those southern politicians trying to use words to hide their actions as avowed racists proclaiming that "States Rights" were the over ridinhg issue regarding desegration. Conservative or segragationist Political Correctness was as offensive as the actions it sought to cover up.

The only thing worse than being a self proclaimed racist is being a closet racist.

I guess we need to define what PC is. I think a majority of the people who are 'offended' by PC are those who have never been on the wrong end of words. I admit that PC is very undefined and very random. It's all about POV and ones personal experience. When I hear something that I find offensive I try as best as I can to discern what the intent was. As with my friend who used the "jewing down' term, I know he is not antisemitic. He has been a friend for years and I know it was a 'mistake' on his part. He realized it was not appropriate and he has never used the term again although I give him grief about it to this day.

PC is by no means equal. Bill Cosby, Robin Williams and David Duke could all tell te exact same joke about a black/jew/hispanic (take your pick). Two of them would be able to get away with it and I would laugh with them. One would get run out of town on a rail. Is that fair? I think it is because my experience with Williams and Cosby suggest that their intent is far different then that of a former Grand Wizard of the KKK.

It's all about context and intent. And that is up to interpretation from the recipient. There are words and terms that I have no problem with never hearing. Yet those same terms can be used in a joke by the right person to mock the very beliefs and people who used them in hurtful ways.

I do agree with the assertion that there are times when PC runs a muck. But the very reason PC came about in the first place is because people were using words and terms that were hurtful to a segment of society with out even realizing or who realized it and did not care.

Actually that couldn't be any further from the truth.
