Pulling Out Of Fort Lauderdale

I still want to know who is responsible for the decision to move to FLL? the post was about accountability and the failure to work together.

It now appears the FLL is a huge operational failure. and this time it can't be laid at anyones feet except those residing at 2345 Crystal Drive, Arlington, VA

They are going to identify the culprit as soon as they finish writing and publishing their apology to the employees in response to the DOT report on the PHL Christmas meltdown.

I'd like to see something more substantial to this rumor. The operation has been running barely 6 weeks. Come on, people! I would expect they let it run a whole season first.

Rumor? It sounds totally believable to me. Compared to U's decision years ago to pay top dollar for PSA, then proceed to close PSA stations, drop PSA routes, and move PSA employees acquired as a result, this apparent FLL fiasco is just a brain fa*t in comparison! 😛

Two comments:

1. The airline will not reduce operations because of delays, operational issues, etc. If that were the case, US Airways would be out of BOS, LGA, PHL, and DCA, just to name a few.

2. The delay problems can be managed. Maybe US Airways scheduling should have done more research on the issue, but by and large, delays can be managed. Block times can be padded for extended taxi times (like I am sure they are/were at PHL) and the airport can encourage use of Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, Opa-Locka, and others. I think there is something of a GA-only runway at FLL as well - or at least its not big enough for 737's etc. So traffic could potentially be segregated. I am sure those are just the tip of the ice-berg.

Most of the problems could be alleviated if the airport would just defy the NIMBY's and start regular use of the cross wind runway and run the airport similar to how LGA and DCA are run.

Moving the FLL "hub" to TPA or MCO might have advantages in operations, but that will negate any advantage of being convenient to the origin/destiantion Hispanic community near FLL it hoped to attract. I think USAirways' FLL intention was to become the "more convenient than MIA" airport for all those folks in Dade and Broward counties. Moving the "hub" to MCO or TPA will put the Latin American and Caribbean service out of easy reach for the people it was hoping to attract as O/D passengers.

MCO and TPA, though, have huge operational advantages over FLL with their Customs/Immigration facilities and runway availability. Back in 1984, Piedmont (original version) Florida Shuttle tried to use FLL runway 9R/27L for their "small" F-28 aircraft. You could hear the howls of protest all the way to Tallhassee over the noise it created. Since then, the airport highly discourages jet operations on that runway. The same noise problem applies to 13/31. From an airline operations point of view, FLL is permanently a one-runway operation with little hope for future changes.

I saw this article posted on airliners.net, it may be of interest.

The Federal Aviation Administration has limited the number of planes allowed to land each hour at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and may expand the use of two secondary runways because of concern about increasing travel delays.

Finally the FAA is stepping in and putting an end to NIMBY madness. Once they get a feel for the multiple runway operation ala LGA and DCA, delays should ease up.

Now if they would just do this for the BUR terminal that the city wants.

Here's another management mistake( i.e. metrojet, business select) that labor will end up paying for.

Labor pays for what Labor wants to pay for.

In order to move forward the first thing an organization needs to do is admit its shortcomings and outright failures and move on with an eye towards cooperation going forward.

This is why U doesn't have much of a chance.

When Usairways announced FLL Delta added a bunch of FLL flights. FLL-CHS, FLL-RDU, FLL-RIC, FLL-GSO, FLL-DCA, FLL-ORF, I can't remember all of them. So now there's an airtraffic problem? Chalk one more up for Delta!!! They want USAir's mid-atlantic, and they will do anything to get it.
