What's new

quitting

Working for US was a blast!

I just couldn’t afford to work there anymore.

I agree with you there. This fall when I wasn't working I was making $1100 a month! That is terrible! Who the hell can live off of $1100 a month. One month I only made a $1000. For December I made just a little over $1300. Pathetic!

I would never quit unless I had something already set up to move to. The grass always seems greener someplace else but when you get there, you might find out it was all weeds. I disagree with Geek who said:

Most companies are happy to help you pay for more education. A good company thinks a more educated workforce is a better work force. NOT US Airways. They think if they keep you uneducated and untrained except in a very narrow field they keep you trapped.

US offers tuition reimbursement for school and is encouraging employees to take advantage of it so they can move into a better position.

Don't fall into the "I've been here to long to quit" mind set. I left after 22 years and have no regrets.

AMEN! The experience I gained from 7 1/2 years with HP/US was valuable. I just couldn't afford to continue. New company has tuition reimnbursement (5X as much as US) and the salary difference was too much to pass up. Now I buy tickets, get confirmed seats and mileage. Go figure.

I too quit. And like Geek, I miss the airline and the people-tremendously! However it is such a dead end job and awful company to work for. I don't blame anyone, I blame the current economic environment and previous poor management decisions, such as fuel hedging , that allowed Southwest to survive the aftermath of 09/11. I just received confirmation that my decision was the right one today, I got my W-2. I worked for US for 6 months in 2007 and I made $13,985!!!!!! Poverty wages as a 7 year flight attendant, on reserve of course. I worked the remaining 6 months at my new job where I made $30485.00 for just 6 months. While money is not everything, it certainly helps creater a lifestyle of comfort. I would reommend that anyone with less than 25 years of seniority get of there. You can do better anywhere else. Only those with more than 25 years get to take advantage of the flexibility that we all dream of. It just is not what it used to be....so sad.

I did quit and let me tell you while you do miss the airline, SOME of the people you work with, the options in travel, I do not regret leaving one bit.

Well in all honesty your feelings CAN be attributed to THAT Time of Year. Yesterday, 1/21st was considered THE MOST DEPRESSING Day of The Year- so if there is any solace into how you are feeling, chalk that up for ill feelings. As far as THIS PLACE goes, D-O-N-'T let it bring you down! I learned a LONG Time ago........go to work, do your job and treat people the way you would like to be treated...........EVERYTHING Else will fall in place. I pay little attention to most of the BS around here and pay no mind to the Clowns that Run cirUS. Throw in a cocktail or two <ha> and if anything you have to laugh at the Stupidity you see on a RECURRING Basis. QUIT......I am not about to stop stirring things up.
I was going to say yes but then I read this...I am going to work tomorrow

Astro.. I do have to say, you always give the best advice. I really enjoy your postings.

US offers a whopping total of $1000 a year in tuition reimbursement. That won't pay for 1 certification class or one class and books at a University. Yea maybe it will pay for a couple of classes at Community College but that won't get you very far. It will take you years to get anything done.
Where I work now, I have
1 person completing their PHD,
4 people completing their bachelors
2 people that just completed their bachelors
Plus all the online training you want that includes all IT certification you can think of, MCSE, Cisco, Unix, and GIAC....ect
All completely paid for by my employer.

Plus tons of Management training....something US Airways doesn't have a clue about!

Turning 55 after 35 means a different thing to me, though. I can retire at 55 and with 35 years invested, I will receive FULL retirement benefits...including medical insurance. I'm sure yours is totally different. This may explain why ex-airline employees seek employment in my field of employment.

I am glad you get FULL benefits and medical when you retire. That was promised to me as well. Just remember, there is no guarantee.

...on top of that whopping $1000
the student/employee must be full time for a year
most college students work part time

I was hired in 02 at pdt because i could not find anything else.I planned to leave the day i was hired at $6.85 per hour.Back then the iam must have nuzzled up to the company to sign off on a sell out contract. Here it is over 5 years later, went on many interviews, sent many resumes, only to find my age "60" must be working against me.

Went through 2 chapter 11's and the company still keeps taking away,i.e holidays, personal days, insulting wage increases, etc.

I have 17 months to go till 62 then retirement.I hope i can hold out driving 65 miles a day 5 days a week working for a company that assigns no value to the employees.

I wish all well and dont refer anyone to this airline.

MANY stay here out of fear and will come up with 101 reasons as to why they are "making it work for them". It's not easy to start over but I'm sorry anything is better than here. Before I get the "Then leave" line......the resume' is in at quite a few places. It's all wait and see. Forget about TODAY......can you afford to retire here when your 65? I'm in my 30's and to see what I'd get at retirement age is SCARY. WHY would you want to stay at a company where you HAVE to do odd jobs on the side or a part time position somewhere to make ends meet? To each their own but let us be honest here and say that many DO stay out of fear.

As long as I can live in base I will not consider leaving. If the time comes that I will have to commute, then I will evaluate my position again at that time. I just don't see junior me commuting with a toddler at home, who was not part of my "Life Plan" at the time I started this career, but he now "plans my life".

Until then...I love my job...I love my job....I love my job. =)

Zarah I understand where your coming from absolutely. We all have to do what we feel is best for us. 🙂

Over the last 3 years I have been on reserve in PIT and going to Community College on my days OFF. I have paid for it out of my own pocket one semester at a time and will graduate in May with an Associate Degree in Nursing. I have lugged my books all over this country and passed on crew debriefings on overnights since I had school work to do. Having this job helped me get through school because I studied on my trips, which left me time with my family at home. I started with one class per semester. So I disagree with your statement...furthering your education WILL get you far. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and it is not flashing USAirways....
