Is this a good thing? I know nothing about regional air service in the West other than I know the names Mesa and Sky West. Any opinions about which is better. Or, is this just another "of course the new provider is crap, but it's NEW crap" kind of change?

A little disappointed that the Mesa Dash 8 flying was not replaced by Piedmont as had been rumored for some time, curious if some of the smaller stations the Mesa Dash 8's currently serve will support the larger 50 seat CRJ's.

Also if the LGA/DCA slot transaction with DL gains FINAL approval it seems like it would have been very easy to shift 14 aircraft worth of flying to PHX to replace Mesa's Dash 8 and CRJ-200 flying with out having to add yet another (14th) carrier to the mix. All those PDT Dash 8's, AWI/PSA CRJ-200's, CHQ and TSJ E-145's, and MES Saab 340's have to go somewhere and the growth at DCA will be mainly on larger aircraft decides the planned pulldown in LGA is about triple the planned growth in DCA.

My 2 cents

I don't think highly of Mesa, wish we could have dropped them altogether. From my limited knowledge, Horizon and Skywest are the best west coast commuters. Quite frankly I'm shocked because the move puts quality above cost. If US Airways was to start a new market to a smaller airport Skywest would be a good choice, because of the quality. Probably won't expand on the west, but I can dream can't I.

More 50 seat RJs?! Parker and Kirby have said they want to get rid of 50 seaters, but there is no market for them. So instead of using what we already have they sign up for more for 3 years.

It's actually how they're getting rid of them. It's a downsize. 16 total airplanes now 14.

I'm not sure I understand you. I thought they were bringing additional ones, was Skywest already running those for us?

Skywest is probably one of the best regional airlines out there, along with Horizon Air. Classy outfit, with good reliability, and well thought of in the investment community. This is a very positive change, given Mesa's poor reputation and performance.

Sky West is non-union - it's as simple as that. Ask Express Jet just how "quality" they think they are.

I have flown SkyWest/UAX a few times, and have never had any problems with them. In my limited experience with them, I would tend to agree with you. I cannot say the same for US's other Express partners. 😉

Oh please do tell

When I first saw this I thought, Well they contract with everyone else so why not Sky West?

Then I read the article and folks ANYTHING that removes Mesa, the scar upon the aviation landscape can't be bad news. Johnny O and his putrid little airline need to be gone.

Doesnt US own part of Mesa since they emerged from Chapter 11?

I think so, but apparently not enough.

You know it frightening when you think about it. Johnny O and his little toilet bowl airline makes US Airways look like Singapore Airlines
