Interesting if it's true

The California Supreme Court's signal Thursday that it would uphold Proposition 8 but still recognize 18,000 existing same-sex marriages raised questions and concerns about the prospect of being a minority within a minority -- part of an exclusive club whose doors have been closed to others.

Seems like a USSC invitation to me. How do you grant rights to some and not to others?

Dear Garfield,

Stop making sense.

Don't you know that we have "preferred Minorities" in this country?

I'm a "minority" in that I'm of Flemish descent. So where is my preferential treatment?

I guess I am missing the link between equal rights and preferred minorities.

Do you have an example? I cannot think of one off hand.

Bakke decision....

Affirmative action...whether legal or not..

Gay rights...Gar........I can't believe I had to post this.

Don't ask don't tell?

Veteran hiring preferences....

There's more I imagine......

I do not promote or condone what I listed. Its just there.

Piney, perhaps you should explain what being Flemish is. Some on this board may think you're yankin' their chain beacuse they never heard of Flemland....................

Those examples do not deprive an entire segment of their rights.

AA give preferential treatment. Gay rights is the issue at hand. A segment is being deprived of equal status under the law. Don't ask has nothing to do with rights. That is just an example of government and society not willing to deal with an issue. The vet hiring issue I am not familiar with but I assume it is similar to AA.

Prop 8 is depriving a segment of society equal treatment under the law. Allowing the existing marriages to stand while not allowing any one else to enjoy the same rights is not IMO, the same as a quota system, don't ask or AA in that with quota's a certain number are always allowed, don't ask is a separate issue entirely in that it does not even deal with the issue.

Seems to me the treatment of gays in our country is similar to the way Blacks were treated prior to 1964 and women prior to 1920.

The entire premise of affirmative action is wrong as it is discriminatory.
Are there discriminatory exceptions?

No doubt it would as you are too polarized to see the difference.
