Union fears new layoffs, concessions

US Airways flight attendant union leaders gathering in Oakdale today expect management of the ailing airline will soon seek changes to work rules and benefits in what would be a third round of concessions in just 18 months.

And some flight attendants could face layoffs later, if certain changes are imposed.

"Management told us they want us to participate in the new business plan," said Teddy Xidas, president of Local 40 of the Association of Flight Attendants, Oakdale. "That means they're going to ask for some form of concessions."

How flight attendants bid for a month's work is changing, for instance. Reserve flight attendants since last fall no longer can leverage their seniority to set work schedules. And this June, the regular flight attendants will have to fill up crew slots before reserve attendants can be considered for work.
