US Airways to File for Delay of PHL-Beijing

The next logical question should be, if we're to assume fuel costs stay in the $120+ range for the foreseeable future, does LCC plan flying the route ever? Perhaps DAL could request the route, though the pending NWA merger makes it highly unlikely they'd be awarded it. I suppose UAL might make a run at it.

Its a very good and sound decision, and I am for it.

Now, the people that are using this as yet another reason to whine, would also whine it US started up the route and dug tons of money into it.

It never ends.

Well I may agree with you except that they drug their feet with the a/c decision for how long? I think they are just using fuel as an excuse. They always have an excuse for not being able to follow through on anything and whether it's fuel or not the Senator in PA needs to hold their feet to the fire. They need to start being held accountable just like the rest of the employees.

😱 US should be stripped of this authority and it should be given to an airline that has the capability of actually flying it. Sorry to say US is and always will be a joke of an airline. It consistently makes poor choices and this evident back to the days to Ed Colodny. The best US employees and passengers can hope for is that the company will be sold and the name will FINALLY go away. It's one pathetic mistake after another. It's a shame- the potential was always there, just no one ever had a clue to make it come to fruition.

The Tradition continues...

Didn't want Japan in the 80's

In the 90's, couldn't con the pilots into wet leasing the Japan route 'till we got widebodies

In the 00's, bailed out on China after a truly halfhearted effort

You can blame HP on the 00's though...HP flew to Japan before wouldn't you think they would have known how to run an Asian operation?

But how many of current upper management were at HP when the Japan flights operated......

They failed. All you can say is that they know how not to do it, assuming (giant assumption) they learned anything.

So.....for principle sake, they should waste a pile of money on the route now, just so they can look decisive?

I'd say that delaying this is pretty accountable.

Why Don't You Go Post On Your Board! 🙄

I know that UA also used fuel as the reason for a one year delay on a China route, but what puzzles me is that all operators to China should have similar fuel costs. Won't they all have to adjust fares to a level that will cover fuel costs? In US' case, is this really a convenient excuse for the fact that they don't have suitable aircraft at the present time?

The only rationale that I can see regarding fuel is that fares will have to go up and demand will fall, so that existing routes between from EWR and IAD will be able to handle all of the passenger demand.

Well had they had the d@mn planes already (or at least had planes on the way) and had they begun to start putting things together like training and such and then this announcement I could possibly understand as there is other places (Europe, Middle East, India) that we could use the planes right now. I do not need to sit here and rehash all of the idiotic and half @$$ed things that this group has done over the past 2-3 years because the entire nation along with every employee in the industry is well aware and that my friend speaks for itself!!
