What's new

Wal-Mart

Speaking of China, have you seen the smog in beijing? China didnt steal American jobs, we gave it to them so we can breathe clean air. Since you cant see the sun shine at high noon, i would say that is a fair trade.

You actually hit the nail on the head with this one. Since factories were causing smog and other anti-environmental complaints, businesses began sending jobs overseas. The Dow chemical crisis in India should have been a wake-up call.

I didn't know that Saudi Arabia was funding Vietnamese, Indian, and Pakistani immigrant families who work 12-14 hours a day, 7 days a week to run their convenience stores.

BEST SPIN YET!
But welcome to my parlor, FLY!

Those others you mention cater to the ethnic groups of their national origin. Sure, I shop at oriental and indian markets for the health benefits, but they ARE NOT getting AID from their countries of origin 😛

Arab stores on the other hand wouldn't exist if not for their cheap booze sales, cell phone sales and other areas of interests. Yes Mecca is paying for their losses. Live with it 😛

A Paki, Indian, or Vietnamese family who owns and operates a corner convenience store in rural Texas (or any other rural town in the USA) is not catering to his ethnic group or country of origin.

You obviously have not been around rural America lately.

Actually...I have! Mine is considered a Test-Market area. What happen's here happens in Ameica one way or another. The Arabs stick out! Perhaps you should expand your horizons to include Europe.

Hasn't been to a Family owned and operated business either apparently. Buyers like Signals know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Last time I bought major appliances (Ref. Washer & Dryer) I went to Wal-Mart, Best Buy and the local hardware store. Prices @ Wal-Mart =$1,841 (plue $40 delivery), Best Buy was $10 more. The local store came in at just under $1,900 all in.

The manufacturers run a bit of a scam here and that is the Mom & Pop stores can't get the same exact product as the big box retailers. In my case the appliances were Hotpoint which is GE's discount brand. The local store told me to check the model numbers at Best Buy and Wal-Mart and he would "Get as close as I can" with a comparable model and price. Turned out the local guy was the better deal as his refridgerator had glass shelves instead of wire.

In the end I paid $20 more, got glass shelves that would have added $30 to the big box retailers price, not only delivered but set up and connected as the dryer was gas AND the money stayed local and this store sponsored the Little Leauge teams and was very active in the volunteer community.

The point being is that if you do your homework buying locally can result in little or no premium plus the added benefit of keeping the money in the community. Wal-Mart is no panecea when it comes to price. What they count on is consumer laziness. They stock virtually everything and the person is already there so they buy. Pricing at Wal-Mart is a shell game and I for one refuse to play.

The problem with Wal-Mart is that they are creating mega-jobs. It speaks volumes of where society is heading, because if you don't agree with the job description, somebody else will.

Mega jobs where the people working them rely on food stamps and public health. Both are paid for by our taxes, which you aren't including in your low price analysis.

Signals blah blah blah. Wal-Mart is no different than the Mall Stores. A co-worker once told me that he would rather buy a Zenith from a store that charges $500 more than K-Mart would charge because the same product at Kmart was an inferior value. Hmmm...but if the lower quality outlasts the high priced, why should I conform to an idiotic view? Shop at Wal-Mart or shop at the mall with their minimum wage, no health insurance, no benefit employees and cue the violins to cry me a river.

Same song, same dance, but this partner is earning too much on the backs of the losers that work for it 😛

Cry me a river. I don't agree with it, but people are replaceable. Your Obamanomics are working to make us all dependant on CHARITY and lacking in good healthcare since we have to provide it for others.

No one is forcing you to TAKE the job, but if one agrees to the terms, who are you or I to dictate our ideology on the agreed agreement???

Do I take this to mean that you have no problem with your tax dollars going to feed and provide healthcare for Walmart employees?

Maybe if there weren't all this free stuff, more would look to improve their standard of living.

I feed your welfare queens with my tax dollars, why would I give a F**K about Walmart employees that are at least earning their keep by WORKing???

If you feel comfortable shopping at a place that does this,

As of December 2002, 39 class action lawsuits in 30 states were filed against Wal-Mart claiming tens of millions of dollars in back pay owed to hundreds of thousands employees. These lawsuits included instances of Wal-Mart forcing employees to work through breaks, forcing employees to work off the clock, and even deleting hours from employees’ time sheets without their knowledge. According a former Wal-Mart manager in Alabama and Mississippi, Wal-Mart’s central office threatened to write up managers who didn’t reduce labor costs and this led to managers leaning on assistant managers to falsify time sheets and force employees to work without pay.

Then there is little left to say. As a free market Libertarian with a standard of morals, values & ethics I find the behavior of Wal-Mart offensive at best. So offensive that I will not shop there. Others of course may do as they choose.

As an AMERICAN decendant of Europeans from the Italian Nation, I've had to overcome prejudices that engulf those that are looking for a better lifestyle than what their country had to offer.

What you described, I've encountered in other jobs not affiliated with Walmart. Working temp jobs, you do more work in less hours, with less benefits, etc. Wal-Mart values offensive??? Look at the others that have been doing this for decades. Walmart just sticks out because they don't conform to the right and justice crowd

Dont forget that your local retailer is more likely to have better customer service if you have an issue as well. We were shopping for a fridge a few years back and found a great deal on a scratch and dent at the local appliance dealer. Great customer service as well.
