AFA Thread 5/3-6/6

Here's my two cents worth for the week...

1. MF came out with an eline describing the reserve sleep rule changes. Yes, the company is now becoming compliant with the rules governed by the FAA, however, isn't it strange the company waited till the FAA became the topic of many a news blogs recentely. Had the FAA not been scrutinized for their lax dealings with other airlines would the company have changed the policy?

2. The thread about UAL stapeling us to the bottom of the list was quite vigorus in its discussion. I didn't however see a good explanation as to how bilaws can be changed. Here's a stab at it. The BOD meets at their stated meetings. A special meeting is requested to discuss a change in bilaws allowing change from DOH. Normally, after these meetings each base takes this info back to their respective bases and allows input from its members. However, Special BOD meetings can supersede policy and allow an immeadiate vote on special items. Majority plus one would allow change to AFA bilaws for DOH. This is why it is important to get DELTA in the mix of AFA to dilute the UAL majority. Either that or have us resend out AFA affiliation and become a stand alone carrier with another union representing us. In either case, this scenerio could take place. Very scary...

3. If the company states in CBS messages that theft is not taking place, and we know it is, then why isn't AFA clamoring for secure places on the A/C for our bags. It is ludicris to think that we should be at the mercy of a company that doesn't protect it's employees from theft from out-sourced cleaners.

4. For all of the PIT commuters, you will really love this one. This last week BM told one of the CLT commuters that the new crew room in PIT will soon be open: 4 computers, a place for pilot crew bags, etc... Her very next question was if trip sheets would be available for the other bases in there. Since the print shop for all bases is in PIT, it only makes sense that dropping a few boxes in that crew room would help the PIT commuters. Word from PHX directly....."under no circumstance are you to put any trip sheets in the PIT crew room what so ever".... How does Cyndi Lauper say it... True Colors....

Just my opinion...

Really? The company is renting space and providing computers and bag storage in an airport where there isn't even a base? Is this common practice? I mean do we have crewrooms in other airports that are not bases?

Do they still put trip sheets from all the current bases in LAX, SFO, SAN, BWI, MIA, SYR, and GSO as a convenience? Better yet, do these former bases still have crew rooms like PIT is soon to have?

I am missing the Cyndi Lauper connection.

So there isn't any mis-understanding... The print shop for everyones trip sheets in the east is in PIT. They transfer all boxes of trip sheets via COMAT, therefore it is transported via aircraft, meaning they are already at the airport. Had the print shop been anywhere else, that city could have said the same going for it as PIT. As for the other bases? Who knows. The print shop for the east has always been in PIT.

Just my opinion...

Do you ever download the trip sheets? I've been doing that for several years now and prefer it to carrying a bunch of paper.

About a month ago I was forwarded an e-mail that said that there will be a few catcrew computers in PIT in the agents old break area located by international customs arrivals by the escalators of airside.....

Well, my take would be this......

US was not in BK to just drop space. Maybe they will have some presence because they are still paying for space until a certain date in time???????????

If this would be the case, why not do it since we have more commuters from PIT than anyother place on earth!!!!!!

Here’s an idea if someone want to make a few bucks: for a nominal fee offer to send Trip Sheets via Priority Mail flat rate envelope every month.

Ask Gloria Holtz what she would pay for that convenience.

US Airways and United F/A MEC comment on merger reports.

Go to the AFA-CWA website for the entire article.

If we merge with United we'll just have a great big mess and we'll all go under together! Actually, I'll probably be let go since I'm so junior so why should I care what happens...JK

I don't think we are actually going to merge with them but if we do, I hope there is a positive outcome and I hope too many people don't lose their jobs over it. Maybe they will offer a decent buyout with insurance so those who would like to retire but can't afford it can go ahead and retire or those who want to leave can leave without it affecting the rest of us. Simply offering a lump sum of $20,000 which is really $12,000 after taxes just isn't enough. Of course, I know that won't happen.
