Is it the leadership or membership?
I am curious what people think. I see signs around work saying "dont blame the TWU for the way you voted". So to keep to the point of this discussion lets pretend that the concessionary vote was done with a mail out ballot and was passed by a majority.
So keeping that in mind is the TWU responsible for what happened or is it the members fault?
Many remember in 89 that the TWU handed out stickers that said "vote no i support my union" and the membership followed and voted no. The ones who said they were voting yes were browbeaten by local leadershp and called names and degraded and were labled anti union.
The result was after the contract was rejected the next one brought back for a vote was worse ie: leap pay was lower and uniforms were lost etc.
The leadership said "vote yes this is as good as its gonna get" and it was ratified.
Now we go to the latest round and keep in mind we are assuming a legit vote was taken.
The leadership was sayin you have two choices you can have bad or worse and the bad is accepting concesssions and worse is what you will get if you do not.
People i have talked to that will admit to voting yes took that as a threat that if you did not vote yes then they were gonna bring back something alot worse and they were of the opinion that they would not receive representation if the vote did not go how TWU was recomending. Sorta like punishment for not voting how the TWU wanted them to. Another "this is as good as its gonna get"
It seems like a rational conclusion expecially if they had experience like in 89.
So the question is is it the memberships fault or the leaderships fault or a combination of both?
