What's new

"Easties" out West

Reserves at any Airline should be used for sick calls, vacation and for crews going illegal...not because Biddy or Sissy do not feel like doing some part of their trip! BTW Crew Scheduling only does it because it's in the contract! So is this Auto thing. So I see 2 things that need to change in the new CBA!

THANK YOU!!! Yes, we need to change A LOT of things in the new contract. Auto'ing is one of them. The east needs the west vacation and the west needs the east pay ... and that is just the start. Together we can fight and get it. At the meer mention of CHAOS our stock will drop so fast the executives will have to give us what we want. Where is our union??????

I agree this is just what management wants. Put both sides up against each other like they do the express carriers. Once again there looking for the smallest price tag.

Yes we in scheduling do alot of tagging. And yes the reserves do not like it. But as long as your on reserve your available to the comapany. We will not use a HOT because they are there for the late sick calls which we get constantly, or the inbound sick call because a line holder does not want to do the last turn of the trip or because an FA does a no show. It does not matter if there is 15 FA's in the hot room or not they are not going to be used unless its a last resort. Autos are just a small number of trips that are tagged onto reserves.
Why are line holders allowed to drop the last turn of their trip?

It's called AUTO (Authorized Unpaid Time Off), just a way to go home early or go in a little later for the start of the trip. Perhaps misused or abused, it's awarded by seniority if you fax in the request 24 hours before the trip starts, and by first come first serve if you call at 00:01 on the day of.

Reserve staffing has to be sufficient. Often we are short reserves, and line holders get a little huffy if their request is denied.

I'm sure not as huffy as I would be if I where tagged to do Biddy's last turn...I assure you of that!

Oh I see, so it is like the reserves in Vegas that NEVER get used. Deadhead me to Vegas (pulling off fare paying paxs) to work an LAX turn only to DH me back to PHX. Some things will never make sense. And, the tagging IS to cover AUTO'ing more often than not in my experience. I will show up at a plane and the current crew will say "so and so AUTO'ed so here you are....." I think if you do not want to work the first or last turn of your trip you should drop the whole thing. However, I may feel differently if I am ever a line holder.

Why tag me when you have people sitting at the airport WAITING to go somewhere. If you use all the HOT reserve folks, "upgrade" some people on reserve at home. Believe me, that happens ALL the time. If we just understood how the system worked or why it was happening we would probably be a lot more understanding. But, if a reserve asks why we get b1tched out for questioning them. Then, they cannot find the tape of the call when our sup's request it. It is better not to ask and just have your sup take care of it.....

Yes, scheduling is a poorly run operation out west. Even the inflight sups and line holders agree with that opinion. However, I do not blame the schedulers themselves, they are simply doing what management tells them to do.

I do not think they (the schedulers) have an easy job and I do not envy them. In fact a few there are always real nice to me and I think it is because I am nice to them. They tell me why they are doing what they are doing and most times it makes complete sense and in reality I am always gladly willing to help if it means more flights will go out on time and our pax will be happy.

I always try to be nice to them on the phone because, again, I would never want their job and I try to treat others how I want to be treated, however, the way the system is set up is inefficient. Many other airlines around the world run with far fewer reserves and without the use of tagging.
Well just let them enjoy it now, hopefully scheduling will move to PIT or CLT without some of those schedulers out in PHX. That scheduling mess in PHX is a big control issue that needs to be done away with. I'm sure with the turnover rates the way they are in PHX they will get the hint. I know a few of the East people that ended up quitting West and 99% of it was because of the schedulers.

What the Schedulers need to realize is that they are basically our secretaries...they schedule us for work!

I hope Autoing is phased out with the new combined contract, and if pref bid is not put into effect, atleast I hope we go back to the old seniority based rsv system that we used to utilize in the east. People were alot more friendly back in those days.

oh stewardess honey, can I have another gin and tonic, thanks sweety

Oh now, tell that to the schedulers in PHX. I have alot of respect for the schedulers in PIT, for the most part they do a wonderful job and from what my friends say (the ones that went out to AWA)apparantly we have it VERY VERY good. Our contract may suck right now but not near as bad as the West contract (as it pertains to RSV) and at least it's to the point and is followed by the schedulers.

For the most part...I think systems scheduling forgot that memo though!
