Add 3 to Domestic for 233 YTD and Total 397 YTD.

The average attrition is 56.71/mo.

During 2007 avg. monthly attrition was 102.08 and in 2006 it was 156.16. However, those numbers include those furloughees who lost their recall rights during those years; so, it's hard to say how much actual attrition is down.

I guess the majority of the August attrition was people taking the VBR who will show in the retiree numbers later. I was really surprised that the total retirees for August was only 5. The retirement list for August on Flight Service website only had 4 names on it. (In case anyone didn't know, a retiree can choose to keep their name off the retiree list that is published. Every month the list has fewer names that the actual number of retirees.)

Ok, it's obvious that they are counting the VBRs in some special way. These numbers are straight off the Flight Service website. If you look at the Domestic and International totals from August to September, we lost only 34 f/as (for all reasons--quit, died, retired, got fired) in September. However, the total retiree number jumped 288 from August to September.

The retirement roster for September has 283 names on it. So, some of these were obviously counted as leaving in the August numbers because they took the VBR, but "official" retirement date was not until September.

I have a feeling that the numbers are not going to add up for quite awhile now as people move from VBR status to actual retirement.

Jim, why is my number getting lower and lower? I just dropped from 17706 to 17708 in one week. What's up? Are most of the people quitting junior to me? Seems hard to believe but I have no way of explaining why I'm not moving up at all. Does someone who is terminated and gets his/her job back in the middle of the month be responsible for the sudden change of numbers?

Byron, every month there are people coming back onto the seniority list from various kinds of leave. Even though they may have lost some seniority during their leave, they are still senior to us; so, when they come back to active status our numbers go up (you say down, I say up. Going from 17706 to 17708 to me means the number is going up. You think of it as slipping down the list). When people junior to us leave (for whatever reason) it does not affect our seniority at all.

They only purge the seniority list twice a year--January and June--of the people who have quit, died, retired, or gotten fired. At those times we generally see a substantial drop in the seniority number.

for what its worth...
I have heard that there will be a reshuffle sometime this month or early next month due to the VBRs...

There were in fact 17 names on the retirement roster for October. First time since they've been publishing names and numbers for attrition and retirements that the numbers actually matched the list. However, one of the names was a Lima f/a and two were former TW that I think were retiring from furlough. They were listed as SLT, but the names are not familiar to me at all.

There has been an increase of 2 on the domestic number. I have no idea what is going on. The total for the year also increased by two, but the number of retirees increased by 4!

Your guess is as good as mine. Latest numbers from the Flight Service website...

-----For 2008-------------------October, 2008
Dom 452.................................17
Intrl 386..................................11
Totl 838..................................28

Retire 525................................21

(Remember, the monthly numbers are not posted on the website. I just subtract this month's YTD totals from last month's YTD totals to determine the monthly number.)

November numbers:

-----For 2008-------------------November, 2008
Dom 464.................................12
Intrl 393..................................7
Totl 857..................................19

Retire 534................................9

P.S. There are 11 names on the Retirement Roster on the Flight Service website showing November retirement dates. As I said before, don't expect the numbers to match.

New numbers for November:

-----For 2008-------------------November, 2008
Dom 468.................................16
Intrl 399..................................13
Totl 867...................................29
Retire 535................................10

Total attrition for the month increased by 10.

Interesting piece of trivia as we approach the end of the year...the average monthly attrition for 2008 through November is 79. If this rate holds for December, the total attrition for the year will be 946.
So, even with the VBRs, the total attrition for this year will be down 23% from 2007 (total attrition 1224) and 49.5% from 2006 (total: 1870). And, because of the recalls over the past year, the total f/a corps has not dropped in number appreciably; so, we can't say that a smaller group would mean fewer leaving.

Draw your own conclusions.

First "final" December and YTD numbers.

-----For 2008-------------------December, 2008
Dom 484.................................16
Intrl 415..................................16
Totl 899..................................32
Retire 551.................................16

I'm a little sceptical of the fact that the attrition was 16 in each category, but these are the numbers posted on the Flight Service website. Attrition for the year was substantially below 2007 even with the VBR--down 26.55%.

P.S. Flight Service must be using their own math system...there are 18 names on the Retirement Roster for December--all with retirement dates of 12/01/08 through 12/31/08.
