What's new

Hawaiian Long Haul Fleet

Well, since the East was operating one HNL turn, you'd occasionally get on the of the ex-ATA birds...
Do you mean the 3 ex-ATA 757's that US acquired? Those all went to the East side and were converted to Envoy/coach configuration - I don't remember the total number of seats off the top of my head but certainly under 200. They were the first 757's to do European routes IIRC. One, operated by the East, did and maybe still does one PHX-HNL route - that started fairly recently and was due to a 757 lease expiration on the West side.

75E seating is 12 and 164. The east lost the HNL service for Dec. It is supposed to be coming back to CLT in Jan.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Total seating on the east a/c is 176 vs 190 on the west. The east flight appears to have ended though...I don't see it loaded anymore, even into next year, the flights are all west (up to 3 daily to HNL for the last half of December). This is probably due to the fact that the west is apparently getting a new frame, N207UW, though I have no idea where it's coming from.

Parker said that they've been actively looking for 757's - thought they had 3 lined up but they were sold to someone else. I believe one of the problems with finding them is the freighter conversions - FedEx can afford to pay more than US can.

Too bad US didn't in on BA's disposal of its 57 fleet. RR engines and all. Is anyone else selling the type?

I won't even pretend that I follow the used airplane market, so I don't know. All I do know is the they hoped to lease 3 757's but they were sold to someone else. There were only 890 -200's still flying as of this past summer with only a little over 300 of those built after 1990, so not many that aren't over 20 years old. Without a real replacement with similar capacity/range they're being phased out by operators slowly. As far as I know FedEx is still buying more 757's, UPS may be too.

(I have been saying this for months Hawaiian is ripe for plucking they have the routes the equipment that they keep adding to the fleet. Our service in the pacific is a freaking joke. the ATA 757s are junk....If we gotta merge this should be out target we need wide body planes and route to the pacific Asian markets Japan South Korea Sydney etc
Read this report from the LA times)

I just flew on 905UW from PHL-PHX on a rare Thansgiving Day flight for this plane. I was shocked at the interior condition of this plane. Still cloth seats in coach, and standard chair seats for first. The plane was clean, but just old, worn down, and tired looking. It looked like someone had used the outside of the front coach lav as a walll for hitting tennis or golf balls. I can't believe US markets these planes to Hawai. I would never fly on this plane, coach or first to Hawaii with so many other options. This is not competitive at all, unless you want the cheapest price, which is not always the case.

Conversly, I have flown on 2 of the ex-ATA aircraft, as well as most of the older East 757's that have been reconfigured. I have flown in those planes in Y to Europe, as well as Y from LAX-PHL 2 yrs ago on another rare flight schedule for this plane, and from MBJ-PHL last year. Those 3/4 lie-flat Y seats are great. They have always worked, are just as comfortable as United & AA business seats on their 777 & 767's respectively. The interiors, of the East and ATA planes are not as worn, because the planes are newer. If this was a discussion over condition of the US 757's, I would argue that the older west planes are really junk.

However, on US at least, i would prefer a coach seat on the Airbus over Boeing any day of the week.

I think that US is still in the process of updating the interiors of the fleet, so it appears that you got one of the planes that haven't been updated yet. While I'd be surprised if the West 757's were fitted with Envoy up front like the ex-ATA 757's - Tempe seems to consider standard domestic F as satisfactory for HI flights - at least the interiors are getting a needed make-over.

I flew on HA back in August. I loved it. The experience reminded me of how flying used to be back before all the cutbacks. I worry that if we should merge, it may ruin a good thing.

Ditto..I flew phx-hnl nonstop on Ha and couldn't believe the difference!

Its true the west 757's are hammered. Awa ran the snot out of those on many short haul trips phx-las, las-sna packed to the gills with people and it put too much wear and tear on them. Even with the updates, they just look/feel dingy.

I think most airlines consider domestic F as suitable for Hawaii flying.

None of the four West 757s that received the cabin upgrades have Envoy, but everything else seems to be standard with their East counterparts - leather seat covers, LCD monitors, bin extensions, etc. I'm guessing that after the holiday season the remaining four will go in for the upgrades.

I believe that the East plane did PHX-HNL during the fall and may have already ended. IIRC, during X-mas, it's just the West 75's.
