Had dinner with a few friends the other night and they said HP is having a Flight Attendant Class in September.

Hope they know what they are getting themselves into. They will all be junior to the invols when they come back.

Why not hire furloughed U F/As and let them keep their seniority on the old U system? So they can work in the west with the new DOH until they are recalled to the east side with their old DOH and decide which they want to do.

Because the merger hasn't gone through and the HP flight attendants, (rightfully) would be up in arms having a bunch of new hires with lots of seniority taking up their trips.

duh

About 300 more flight attendants at US Airways will take voluntary leave from the troubled airline by year's end, bringing the total to more than 1,200, their union chief said Thursday.

US Airways is making the voluntary furlough offer -- its second this year -- because it is reducing the size of its fleet. The bankrupt airline plans to return 49 jet planes to leasing companies by spring and to sell another seven jets to a New York firm as part of US Airways' reorganization plan.

Earlier this week, US Airways said it would drop its four daily Pittsburgh to Atlanta flights after Aug. 2, in addition to canceling direct service to Seattle and San Diego next month.

"A significant portion of the flight attendants will probably come from Pittsburgh, I suspect," said Teddy Xidas, president of the US Airways unit of the Association of Flight Attendants.

The airline made a similar offer in April that was accepted by about 500 flight attendants. They will leave US Airways on Dec. 2 along with another 477 flight attendants taking early retirement.

"That's 1,200 or 1,300 that are leaving this year," said Xidas. An additional 48 flight attendants "just up and quit" in May, as did 61 in June and 10 so far in July, she said.

US Airways employs about 850 flight attendants based in Pittsburgh, out of about 4,700 systemwide. That level should fall to about 4,300, including about 700 in Pittsburgh, by September, Xidas said.

The flight attendants union negotiated terms of the most-recent voluntary furlough program on Tuesday. They state that a flight attendant who is on active duty status as of July 7 and continues working through Sept. 1 is eligible to receive a $10,000 cash settlement, travel benefits and the right to be recalled to work.

"We have recall rights when the company starts to recall employees back. We are furloughees," said Xidas, herself a Pittsburgh-based flight attendant who chose to go on furlough Dec. 2.

US Airways spokeswoman Amy Kudwa said the airline made the severance offer "as a result of the previously announced reduction in aircraft and resulting overstaffing." The airline has made no similar offers to other work groups, she said.

Read their response again. They keep US DOH for the East (if they get recall) and work their NEW DOH in the WEST ie - same as a new hire off the street -
You would cut down on having to possibly furlough in the future since the FAs would be recalled down the line somewhere anyway. You arent creating something advantageous for them, you have people who already know something about the business, and if something happens, they already know how to file unemployment. 🙄

Can I just say that there really won't be a whole-lotta f/a trying to get into phx. most of our f/a commute from the southeast, FLorida to be exact. It is immpossible sometimes to nonrev because of all the commuters. The f/a that commute from LA are mostly leaving on the VFLR's. NOBODY WANTS PHX!!!! Chill out....GOSH!!!!!!!!!! There will be more f/a trying to come to the east coast to be based from AWA. I have not even ONCE heard a f/a that is junior to AWA's f/a's complain about AWA f/a's coming into PHL..CLT..Anywhere. We will all be as one. So, just relax and chill out.

As far as the title of this thread. I did talk to a few people I know at AWA, and yes, it is not a rumor. AWA has a class for SEP. So, for you all to be hiring still, there must be something else going on. What I mean is they must not expect to furlough after the merger because I do not feel like they would hire just to furlough. That would be stupid.

The merged airline is going to be one airline, not a bunch of little kingdoms. If the US flight attendants want low paying jobs with HP, they come and get hired by HP. Why should HP have a class that may have off the street hires at the bottom of seniority and furloughed US people at a higher level of seniority?

HP is hiring for PHX based Flight attendants, that is where we need them NOW, at America West, not at the merged company that will exist at some point in the future.

Without HP, US would be a memory, remember that please.

Looks like we're never going to be able to forget that, huh? Much like the old US people kept reminding us the Speedbird is dead. That worked wonders for the new company then and its looking good now. Thanks.

2-3 years from now it will be 1 company. In the mean time (and in airline years thats a long time) it is going to be 2 companies.

Why would furloughed US employees have more seniority than off the street newhires when they are all in the SAME CLASS for training? It would go by whatever you use to give CLASS seniority. The US people wouldnt get more time just because they have time at US, they'd be mixed in with everyone else depending on where they fall. It used to be age for same class seniority, now its the end of the SS#.

So knowing US has lots of invol furloughs, you'd suggest hiring off the street (without checking with the current furloughs to see if they'd want to work at HP based in PHX), knowing that in 3 years they're going to be at HP anyway, already trained and working the line if there are openings. This means that the people who are NOT HP people as of yet will be expecting certain things that might not happen if a furlough occurs. I just dont see how that is good business (or employee relations) sense to do that.

Hopefully as someone else has said, they know what the future holds and all the new hires and invols will be back on property in 3 years.

I'm not convinced US would have been a "memory" if not for AWA. I am excited about working for a new management team, though.

Actually I think it's going to be the other way around. America West will be the memory. We're losing the name America West for petes' sakes. Geez! Chill out! LOL

I grew up working for HP. I've been here almost 20 years and enjoy working here and will always treasure that memory.

As far as the new improve airline, I am looking forward to it and I am glad to hear that most US F/A are happy where they are.

If we all work together, think positive, create a positive environment, it will work out.

So everyone. Chill out. Let go of the ego. Humble yourself and let's all work together.

The combined goal of this merged airline should be to punch the snot out of Southwest repeatedly, breaking bones each time. Everytime we hit, there should be the snapping of ribs.

I dont particularly want to see anybody hurt, but I am sure tired of working for a "loser" airline and management that doesnt give a crap. If I'm going to come in and bust my ass to get my job done, I want to be able to be proud at the end of the day that at least it was for something.
