Is the IAM a company union?

Attacks on Teamsters

For Teamsters, the period of the last 15 years has been a continuous assault on wages, job security, benefits and conditions: wage freezes; wage cuts; the introduction of two-tier contracts, probationary periods and productivity deals; wholesale introduction of double-breasting and all that goes with it; the erosion of the 8-hour day; and the demand for co-payments for health benefits are just some of the cuts they have faced.

The offensive of the employers was only successful because the past corrupt Teamsters' leadership followed a policy of cooperating with management rather than fighting for the interests of the rank and file. Practically all the gains of the past were given up by the Old Guard leadership with hardly a struggle. At the same time, rather than organize new members, the Teamster leadership orchestrated raids on other unions, and signed contracts that hurt other workers. The pension funds of the union were plundered as bribes and corruption became the method of the union to gain favors.

The government sought to take advantage of the weakened situation in the Teamsters union by filing a lawsuit to take control of the running of the union.

oh dear....my my my 😱

Nope, only ibt represented flight attendants and dispatchers flew NWA flights that NWA would have cancelled because of the strike.

Champion Air.

And the IAM crossed the picket line at NWA!!! Just because one group crossed does that make it right? Its just WRONG!!!! Do they teach this at Placid? "We believe 100% in soliderity and will not cross a picket line....that is of course someone else does first"

And you wonder why unions have been in steady decline, comes down to "**** You, I Got Mine"

The majority of the treads on this forum have turned in to the IAM vs IBT, neither of them stating what they are going to do, but slamming the other! Received another card from the IAM today....they did, they did, they did......nothing saying "We"?

I feel much better now after a little venting

In all fairness to the IAM its descent into Company unionism was inevitable due to the prevelence of Business Unionism.

Business Unionism is different than Company unionism, however its just as destructive to the working class.

Business unionism is where unions put the bottom line ahead of ideology. The Treasury ahead of the members.

The IAM held out as long as they could. Their membership has been declining for years as the TWU made gains by constantly undercutting them.

It was a long time coming, at least twenty years. What you guys may find shocking is that some of the concesions that you gave up in 2003, the TWU gave up in 1983!

The IAM has been hemoraging members while the TWU has been growing, but the majority of the growth was not from certification drives but rather from growth of the companies where the TWU granted contracts that were favorable to the company.

AFL-CIO affiliation protected the TWU from raids, most TWU members would gladly have chosen the IAM over the TWU if given the opportunity.

Its no coincidence that the little support the TWU has in the AA system is from RTW states like Oklahoma and Texas. If another union tried to organize the Fleet service clerks they would be very successful, because unlike maintenance where the majority of the class and craft is in Oklahoma, Fleet workers are more evenly disbursed.
