What's new

Layoffs coming soon !

Don't I know it! Realistically, should this go through, it would be most likely 10 years and below. At worst 15. It is too early, of course, but based on what we do know (high seniority at US and UA, gas prices, consolitation of flights, this could be big. I have over 25 years now, but I do remember those packages coming out. Still, with all the mergers, it was after the completion of the 2nd year of the merger that the furloughs started. Hold on tight guys. Things are going to interesting!

IF this United merger was to happen, and no one but the executives know whether it will, no one can say anything is or is not going to happen. How sad that a low level hourly worker can spark a flame just by making an entirely uneducated, unfounded remark. Let's wait and see what happens. We have years before any part of this merger would affect us one way or another.
I think that we, as employees, whether UA, US or former HP, should remember is that the employee groups have had no say in whether to merge or not. These (potential) mergers have never been put to a vote and I think it's very sad how the groups gang up on each other. The employee groups should UNITE and put up a UNITED [no pun intended] front to the management. That's how we get things done. Divide and conquer plays right into the company's hands.

This has nothing to do with divide and conquer. It is just plain fact. Look at every previous merger, even ones that you may or may not have been around for based on your seniority, and there are always furloughs. United is a huge airline. United, USAir, Piedmont are/were legacy carriers who took stock in their employees. Therefore, turnover was virtually non-existant. You either retired or died. America West, unfortunatley, undervalued their employees, and turnover is/was very high. One does not need a doctorate in mathematics to figure it out. Simple numbers. This merger will happen.

Id have to wonder if may be the combined carriers if that happens, would offer buyouts to all the senior agents and see how that goes before laying off the junior forces?

If they had one brain cell between them they would offer a GM or Ford style buyout with some form of medical. But that is a big if around here. And AFA, we do have an eye out. I really do think they find where the blocks cut off and only offer it to that level and above. It should be open to everyone. They are so afraid if it gets down to 10 years or under, the bottom on their lifestyle will fall out. And well, they are right but we have the same rights as they do. The bottom 10% is not here to be your stool cushion. Offer a buyout to ALL levels of seniority.

Oh, they are a coming. With the United deal, which will happen, and the MEGA seniority between United and USAir, if I was an America West employee, I would be VERY VERY worried. If you have 15 years or less at any of the three carriers...get your resumes ready.
Silly and inflammatory.

Why would you suggest that fellow employees be "very very worried"? Make you feel better?

Why would you want them to worry about something in the future that they have absolutely no control over? Most have enough sense to ignore it but still. . .

<_< Could be the past history lived. Just wait and see time now. Fuel high and unrest with the cabin cews contracts. Grayhound bus seat prices. It's just wait and see time.

Okay, lets not forget the topic "layoffs coming soon"....well I have a suggestion on how to save lots of money..
Lets get do away with the useless duty managers and senior manager positions....they are not needed.
there are tooooo many of them and to do what just move paper.......
In phl we have 3 duty managers on the counter and 3 duty on the concourse.....lets say at about 60,000 a piece
that is a total of 360,000 thousand dollars that is a big waste....and not to mention duty and senior managers
in admin....and admin is still a mess...so there you tempe I have done the work for you..just saved you 360,000
thou in a matter of minutes.....and boy I didn't even need a college diploma to figure that one out...it's called
experience............

For your information, I've been around for all the mergers of recent memory. I don't recall any layoffs from the PSA, Piedmont merger. In fact, I recall Empire regaining there seniority after the integration. Actually, I don't recall any layoffs to the Pilots/ Flight Attendants as a direct result of the AmWest merger. Layoffs, Furloughs, LOA, etc. are all a result of 9/11 and the current economy.

I could not agree more. This mangement is quick to add postions, promotions etc of useless people. Look at the idiot PK in Inflight Admin. The guy has never been able to figure out how to staff this department and what do they do, give him a raise and promotion to director.

Also, was there really a need to fill the International Base manager position in PHL. There is not even an International Bast anymore. I could see when there was an International Division, have a base manager to look over that group but when there is not one, why would you have an international base manager.

Offer a buyout to ALL levels of seniority.

They are not interested in offering buyouts to anyone that has not topped off in pay. It's just not an economically sound decision. It's much cheaper to get rid of someone who is making 38+/hour than someone who is making even a few cents less.

A few cents? Well, factor in the fact the operation will come to a halt from unable to commutes and the general moral factor will be in the toilet. That has a huge $$$ price more than you can even imagine! Something to sleep on right? It's not about what they are interested in, it's about what sustains the operation at the lowest rate while not causing an implosion. Offering buyouts to the top only will only cause the most JR folks to become more disgruntled and you can paint the picture from there.

I hear you crystal clear. But, you are clearly mistaken about your importance. I'm just stating the obvious. In a world where employers value their employees, morale would be an important thing. Have you noticed anything the company has done in the last twenty-five years that has ever shown their loyalty to the line workers? Unable to commutes are the least of the company’s worries. You exceed your allowable “stuck commutingâ€￾ and they’ll put you on dependability. Climb to the top tier and you’re terminated. There! One less person they have to worry about buying out. (“…and don’t you just feel the love?â€￾)

   Mistaken about importance? Well then they will write their own fait. Period end of story.
