What's new

Layoffs coming soon !

I don't have 15 years, but I'm not scared and here are the lessons the first layoff taught us:

1) Flying around without having to go to work is fun
2) getting paid unemployment (if you get involuntary furlough) is fun
3) getting paid severance is fun (if you are eligible)
4) let me repeat GETTING FLIGHT BENEFITS WITHOUT HAVING TO GO TO WORK FOR THEM IS FUN
5) GETTING FLIGHT BENEFITS WITHOUT HAVING TO DEAL WITH COMPUTER GLITCHES IS FUN

😉 see the theme here?

Some of the senior agents are salivating over this. If layoffs happen, I know MORE senior people that are chomping at the bit to do things like go back to school, spend time with grandkids, etc.

A LAYOFF IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD and those on the East who have already been there done that can put you at ease...

And finally, if the dinosaur seniorty at United bumps our most senior people out of their fluff schedules....trust me.....they'd rather just not come to work.....

so, to recap,
FLYING FOR FREE WITHOUT WORKING FOR IT IS AWESOME

LAYOFFS ARE NOT THE END OF THE WORLD

Hi sweets. Int'l Shannon it's always nice to see you break it down in REAL terms. I say get the VF's going as I will climb over 15 people to sign my name up. Fly, Fly, Fly on the weekends as I go back to a 9 to 5 job. Whooooo Hoooooo! ! ! ! Not advocating layoffs but if it's gonna happen it's gonna happen. There will be NO short list of employees wanting a break. 😉

For your information, I've been around for all the mergers of recent memory. I don't recall any layoffs from the PSA, Piedmont merger.

Actually, the PSA merger did eventually result in layoffs.

The first big post-mergers pilot furlough came in May, 1991, when the BAe 146's were parked. The USAir management then subsequently closed all of the PSA crew bases, most of the stations, and eliminated all of the PSA city pairs (handing them to SW and AS). By the time the MD-80's were parked, there was nothing left from the old PSA except some very senior employees, who, through no fault of their own, had essentially displaced many pre-merger USAir employees.

Shannon,

I second that emotion! Been there, done that. I can't wait for my second go 'round. When I was furloughed, I was in airline heaven. Bring it on.

Per my recollection the BAe-146 was parked because of the high maintenance costs. PS Airline only owned 4 of them, PS Group owned the other 16. usAir decided to park them because between the lease cost & maintenance cost it would be cheaper to park them and use the tax write-off. The 4 that usAir accuired were sold to other airlines. But yes that resulted in many pilot lay-offs. Damn I loved that airplane, dont ask me why...but I did.

In fact, I recall Empire regaining there seniority after the integration. Actually, I don't recall any layoffs to the Pilots/ Flight Attendants as a direct result of the AmWest merger. Layoffs, Furloughs, LOA, etc. are all a result of 9/11 and the current economy.
Then you weren't paying close attention. There were HUGE furloughs in all employee groups after the last 2 mergers. There haven't been any furloughs anywhere, yet, because of the HP merger. However, once United is on board, hold onto your hat!

And didn't Warren Buffett end up owning PSAirmotive, who charged well over the normal rate for performing the maintenance?

BAe 146 stood for:

a.) Bring Another Engine or

b.) British Attempt at Engineering

Remember SPARCy and Rambo?

Sounded like the space shuttle taking off.
