No Tokyo though, someone in Tempe doesn't eat sushi

But maybe they do eat tempeh when they to go to a Japanese place.?? 😉

Bad puns aside, service to another *A hub would be great, but I would think CPH would be a better candidate than ARN; it's a considerably bigger SK hub.

Plus, the beer is much better!!!!

There are reliable reports that US Airways is negotiating to get 3 former ATA B757-23N ETOPS aircraft and the carrier will operate them from Philadelphia to Lisbon, Stockholm, and Milan. Apparently the Flight Training Department is preparing to train about 70 additional B767/B757 International pilots, which could be included as additions with other seasonal service pilot vacancies on Permanent Bid 06-02. Bid 06-02 is scheduled for release in May and will include the additional vacancies if the Company obtains the jets. Scott Kirby, US Airways’ executive vice president of marketing and sales has confirmed the discussions, but it is still unclear if US Airways can complete the deal.

Here are pictures of the aircraft in question, which are being marketed to interested parties as part of ATA’s formal reorganization:

It will be interesting to see if this deal can be completed in the not-to-distant future

So basically, for roughly the cost it took us to get rid of Siegel, we can ETOPS-rate three aircraft. Not bad!
B)

You still need to run the benifit to cost analysis.
For the 757's add acqusiton and conversion cost, crews, new city cost and the inremental profit that may bring in.

For Siegel, much easier subrtact the cost to get ride of him vs the financial impact of him not making decisions. That was probably an easier sell.

Didn't NW say they had some 757's they want to get rid of?

If a 767 barely made it to FCO, how is a 757 gonna make it to MXP?

And US' bread and butter on International flights is the cargo, a 757 can't hold a decent amount of cargo compared to the 767 or A330.

Why woudn't they just move one of the new 757's to the Glasgow service which would free up the existing 767 for Milan? The same could be said for Shannon and Dublin.

Does anyone know yet if we are even announcing new service? If so they better get on the ball. I know it will be a small announcement of course. I'm not expecting to see anything on a billboard or on the side of a bus. If US thought they could they would fly the emb170 to europe and refuel on a carrier.

Actually, when we started new service to VCE and GLA last year, didn't the tourism depts of each country pay to advertise the new service? We had similar arrangements with many of our Caribbean cities too. So you wouldn't see an advertisement for US Airways directly, but you would see an advertisement for SJO or GLA and see a US Airways logo or airplane in the comercial.

"And US' bread and butter on International flights is the cargo"

I have always thought that. Latest company newsletter gave an example ...cargo paid about 10% of the cost to operate the flight. But maybe it still matters, if you can at least depend on that revenue being there. Best. Greeter.

Part of this 70 pilot training requirement will be to get current 757/767 domestic pilots in CLT and PHL trained to do Caribbean flying, as all or most of that flying will be transferred from the 767 International to the 767 Domestic side in each of those bases as of May 1.

So there really won't be 70 "new" 767 positions, although there should be some new positions if three more airplanes are added to the fleet.

Jim? Anything to add?

The problem right now, in my opinion, is we really can't afford new routes and new airplanes at this time. I think what is going on is Tempe can only afford 3 "old" 757s from ATA. They would probably get the job done but only marginaly. My guess is they would be put on SNN, DUB and GLA; freeing up 3 767s for the 3 new cities. They are asking themselves is it worth it to do this right now? Or, should we just wait until our financial situation improves and a more logical a/c like 330-200s or 767s 200 or 300 series can be purchased/leased affordably?

The 757's would be useful on the domestic / caribbean routes in the winter, especially if they are overwater equipped. Maybe we could see additional flying to the Island and Central America or even South America!
