What's new

Merger with NW ?

I really don't think you have much to worry about.

There are a number of reasons why this is just rumor.

NW has the CAL ace to play. (whom would be on NW radar, along with Delta, parts of United [should they M/A with DAL])
NW is looking to grow internationally...ONLY. (68 787 Drealiners is a lot of anticipated growth) while the DC9 fleet is rapidly shrinking..presently 97 from 150.
NW is well positioned to succeed as a standalone better than any legacy (balance sheet raped from employees pockets)
NW has a balance sheet that would allow it to go after almost any legacy that would bring with it a missing continent in it's coverage.
NW knows all to well that ANY M/A must involve employees...otherwise, the company disintegrates.
US has not (by a long shot) completed it's present merger, with many unhappy employees (couple that with the lingering anger, and bitterness from our bankruptcy spells a recipe for a nuclear warhead).

Primary driving force for any NWA M/A would be the BS term.."shareholder value=the best pay out for management" and global position for competitiveness, Asia, Europe, S.America, and in future Africa.

All indicators point to a NW/Delta merger...that is my prediction. (if they can get the employees from both companies to agree (and they will with the right sweeteners..i.e. MONEY/ GROWTH)

Awww....damn it.....you just popped my bubble.

VERY well said!
Look at it in terms of the current housing market.

Your neighbor down the street has a great house with maid service with a Hummer and a Benz.
Everybody wants to be that guy, he could realize a chunk of change from rising home (airline) prices.
Except that guy is up to his eyeballs in a sea of red ink from improving his place (US Air/US Airways).
His solution is to sell everything at the top of the market to somebody with money (United).

However, the market turns (9/11).
The seller is left without a buyer and has too much overhead and too many payments to make it work (No Plan B).

If he (Wolf) stays he would have a great house but he has to let the maid go (employees furloughed ) and the gardener and the pool man etc. Only he doesn't stay.

He bails with what he could carry and is gone.

You can stay and have a great place to live but you better be able to afford it. I'd rather live within my means being able to save (The U making profits) rather than living beyond my means in that big beautiful house(The U entering bankruptcy X 2).

It was great to work under good conditions but I wonder if Wolf would have stayed would we still be living in that big house (would he have hesitated to make cuts)?

It seems to me that Wolf knew we could not cut it on our own and that still holds true today (even if we do make money).

🙄 Oh yea...this would be a great merger....NOT! Northwest contracts out....what? 3/4 of their ground staff? YUP, that would go over well.
And things are any different here at US?? Prior to the merger with HP, I'm sure US was at close to 3/4 as well. If the company gets its way with the IAM again, you can kiss most of the west stations goodbye as well.

VEN TWO MINNESOTANS MEET oop nort on da lake fichen.

(If you can read this... you're a true Minnesotan!)

Ufda, I did spend too many years there. Not only could I read it, and understood it, my mind heard the accent, dontchyaknow.

For the first (and short lived) MSP-Oslo flight, NWA served lutefisk at the gate....

<_< Hold it, wheres my flag when I need it. I flew the "nonrev shuttle" to OSL a few times over that sumer and (thankfully) never saw Lutefisk at the gate.

Word out of PHL tonight is that a merger with Northwest willl be announced the first week of January.
Give more info. please. On the UA board, it's said we will be merging with them in the spring. I know rumors run rampant in this business, but just give more who, what, where and when if you have it. Thanks.

What has 25 years with US, five mergers and multiple CEOs taught me about this industry-job-company?
Answer:
Listen to most of it-believe less than half of it-and repeat none of it. Although I'll admit the last one I'm guilty of too. Something is brewing. We can all agree on that, but take with a grain of salt, for now anyway, everything you read here or hear on the line. It's all speculation and flights of fancy at this point.....THAT'S IT!

Well, then. That settles it. If it's posted on the USAviation Forums, you can take it to the bank.

Anyway, third time's a charm.

......."eliminate your competition"...maybe they really weren't the village idiots trying to eliminate their competition...think about it!

At an insurmountable cost. Yes they were/are idiots as they repeatedly demonstrate.

Agreed.

Already being discussed on the DL side of the house. 😛h34r:
DL/NW, UA/CO, and AA picking up desired DOJ necessitated divestitures.
