Just wondering if most airlines provide a minimum of 500 miles for short hops? I heard US may change this to the actual miles flown.

Gaucho,

Virtually every major airline continues to give a minimum of 500 miles for flights taken. We have also heard that US was considering a change to this policy, and if they do so, it will cost them even more higher yield elite customers than have already left.

It will also further distinguish US Airways in a race to the bottom--and provide a new answer to the question-how much more can we take away from customers?

If true, once announced, I would think they'd be in for a firestorm of protest....and we'd be leading it.

How much do they think they'll be saving? It's already difficult to redeem miles...so they think they will solve that problem by giving the customers less?

Short flights tend to offer some of the highest yields in the system. Change the mileage accrual rules, and you give people one LESS reason to choose US Airways.

It's unfortunately consistent with their current business practices...

Let's hope it is NOT true.....

That would be a really stupid move given that a PHL - BOS ticket can cost upwards of $800 while a PHL - MCO ticket can be $300 or less for the same days.

Of course it's true.

Dividend Miles program changes

As part of our continuing efforts to provide valuable benefits to our frequent flyers, US Airways is making a change to our Dividend Miles program. We're making these changes to offset record fuel prices and rising airline related expenses while maintaining the benefits you've come to expect. Beginning May 1, 2008, Dividend Miles will award the actual number of miles flown rather than a minimum number of miles flown for each segment. Also, members who redeem miles for award travel within 14-days of departure on usairways.com will be assessed a quick ticketing fee.

Here's a summary of the policy changes:
Accrual

* Tickets purchased on/after March 1, 2008 for travel on US Airways on/after May 1, 2008 will earn the actual number of miles flown and will no longer earn a minimum of 500 miles per segment.
* Tickets flown on partner airlines after May 1, 2008 will earn the actual number of miles flown.

Tickets purchased prior to March 1, 2008 will continue to earn the 500 mile minimum for travel after May 1, 2008. Accrual on flight segments greater than 500 miles in length are not impacted by this change.
Redemption

* Members redeeming miles for award travel online within 14-days of departure will be assessed a quick ticketing fee of $50 per ticket.

A quick ticketing fee of $75 per award ticket will continue to apply for award tickets purchased from US Airways Reservations. Chairman's and Platinum Preferred members booking within 14-days (both online and by phone) are exempt from the fee.

Dividend Miles members still get award travel for as low as 25,000 miles. And, we offer the most generous Preferred upgrade windows in the industry. Earn miles when you fly to any of our 230 destinations in the U.S., Canada, Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America. You can also earn and redeem miles to the nearly 900 destinations served by the Star Alliance.

Thanks for continuing to fly with US.

Doesn't every airline give the minimum 500 miles? Please sell this cheap, embarrassing piece of sh*t excuse for an airline.

To our frequent fliers, thank you for your amazing support throughout the years, and enjoy your flights with your new chosen carriers.

According to the Press Release that EMBFA has posted there is truth to this. Let the firestorm and mass exodus from the few loyal DM Elite members we have left begin....

God, this place really sucks.

It's true-we heard it right from Travis.

We're just not going to take it any more.

Instead of doing something which while undesirable makes sense like UA did (trying to raise money from those who historically pay the least), they are attacking their bread and butter customers who typically provide the most yield and pay the highest fares.

BOS-PHL is typically $900 or more, while the shuttle is usually $400-$600 for a round trip. Hey that's about a dollar a mile yield.

This is going to back fire and cost them much more than they could save. To blame it on fuel is not only ridiculous it is just downright pathetic.

If there were ever a call to action for FFOCUS this is it.

Stay tuned.....

I could never understand why airline used miles flown to gain points. Most loyalty programs like hltes, rental cars, stores, restaurants base the points on dollars spent. You gain status by nights stayed, days rented etc.

I recently had a flight that cost close to $2.00 per mile, and points based on miles would have been great. I beleive TWA tried something like this about 10 years ago with little success.

Just another reason to give US even less of my high yield business. As a 10 year going to gold for 2008, I guess I might be silver next year.

To bad this management only knows how to cut expenses rather than create value.

I have always said, there are two types of people who should NOT manage a business; a salesperson they will give away everything to make a sale, thus no profit. And an Accountant, they will cut out everything so there is nothing of value to sell. I guess US is managed by too many accountants.

This airline and it's war, it's ill advised war, on FFers and High Yield Pax just NEVER ceases to amaze me. Seriously, this WILL be a text book study in a college level marketing course some day.

Art's EXACTLY right...and there are some elements to what Singleflyer says that are correct from my vantage point...

UA's program is MUCH more rational, "get some additional revenue from the once a year traveler who poaches a $0.05 per mile ticket, leave the Elites out of it who bring in the bread and butter."

The managment of this company does things and has ZERO comprehension for what that does to the Elite traveler's mindset.

I've already, in my mind, "made peace" with US...."use them only when it's DIRT cheap and/or when there is just no other choice in air travel." This new policy makes it that much more easier for me to revile the company and its management. (I don't get excited about doing business with stupidity...and that's what I encounter time and time again at US.)

Anyway....I fly long haul....so the effect on me personally is minimal. But I'm smart enough to know who pays the $$$ in this product and it's the NE travelers....the management admitted as much.

If there was EVER a time for Continental to start shoring up it's flight plans in the Northeast, NOW IS THE TIME!!!

Just when it looks like US execs can't possibly get any more stupid in their war against high-yield business fliers, they surprise me.

I have a bigger bald spot from scratching my head harder than I usually do.

There is a groundswell of protest brewing.

I have a feeling this decision will last a week or less......

About the only short haul I really need US for is MHT_LGA.

Question,

If I have my travel department book it as a United Flight (it has a code share) I will get UA miles towards my Prem Ex status. ANd US gets little revenue.

If I am correct I win with more UA mile, and US looses big tome on the loss of revenue.

I live blocks from WN headquarters and I can here the laughing from my house. What! is that the sound of more 737's being put into capasity.
