Mileage accrual

Tom Belden (PHL Inquirer) also covered this in his blog....

In the meantime, would someone please explain to us why this is "part of our continuing efforts to provide valuable benefits?"

I have a bigger bald spot from scratching my head harder than I usually do.

There is a groundswell of protest brewing.

I have a feeling this decision will last a week or less......

I hope you're right. Unbelievable, though, I wonder who thought this would be a good idea??

Just to put it in perspective:

Actual mileage:

DCA-LGA 186
LGA-BOS 160
DCA-BOS 347

Accured mileage on US (BOS-LGA-BOS): 320
Accrued mieage on DL (BOS-LGA-BOS): 1000

The choice sounds pretty easy to me...

FutureUSCapt,

And there you have it. US just gave away their most valuable customers to the competition. I am relatively certain no customer oriented airline is going to match this stupid move.

And when the smoke settles, US will have even FEWER high yield customers, but they'll still think they did the right thing......

Or they will rescind the change and blame yesterday's weather for making a bad decision.

Everyone seems to ask why screw the best and high yielding customers. Well because they can. They know that eventually everyone else will follow suit. When they do I want to know where will you go? Who will you fly then? My guess is most will complain about it and then continue flying on "their" carrier. Most have too many FF mile already invested and most likely only change some of their flying habits.

I say everyone should boycott fling for a day and see what happens. Or better yet ask another carrier if they will tranfer you to their FF program with your current miles. Then it will be eaiser for you to change carriers.

Best of luck to all and this will not be the end of airlines wringing every last dollar out of everyone. One change at a time.

I wonder how many magazine subscriptions I can get for 500,000 miles?

Guess I won't be using my miles to take an actual trip on US  Unless I want to go from BOS to MHT.

Please merge with a real airline and kick Doug and Travis and the rest out the door.

About the only short haul I really need US for is MHT_LGA.

Question,

If I have my travel department book it as a United Flight (it has a code share) I will get UA miles towards my Prem Ex status. ANd US gets little revenue.

If I am correct I win with more UA mile, and US looses big tome on the loss of revenue.

You got it - from now on I'll book PHL - BOS on a United ticket - get 500 miles each way toward Premier status - and give United the revenue instead of USAir.

What were Dougie and his band of fools thinking on this one? How much money could they possible be saving by awarding 350 miles instead of 500 on a short flight? It isn't like there are anymore or any less free tickets out there - just less miles available to use the limited supply of free tickets - so how does that save money? What a joke.

The only thing I can think of is that, much like fuel surcharges, they are hoping the rest of the industry will follow their lead. I really think that the other carriers have too much sense too follow a move like this though...

Unfreaking believeable. What will the jackasses do next? I have always tried to give these Bozos the benefit of a doubt. What was I thinking? Geeze..........

I hope you FFocus guys put the screws to them.

I sit here in amazement, almost anxious to hear the next pea brained idea to come out of Tempe.

Edit to add: I know an A330 to Bejing......................

A textbook case of penny wise and pound foolish. This time, I really believe that they've grossly underestimated the ripple effects of this decision. I'm sitting on the sidelines and betting that this will be reversed with all manner of mea culpas being sprinkled all over the place by Dougweiser.

Of all the areas to look for cutbacks, dropping the 500 mile min credit would've been very low on my list of options.

Let's see you run a monopoly between Pit and CLT charge $400 as the lowest fare and won't give 500 miles. You will charge $225 from CLT to MCO and you get 500 miles. Go figure. I would think the glassware saving alone would have let you keep giving the 500 mile minimum.

At this point we might want to consider eliminating the FC cabin on the domestic fleet and just run a Southwest cabin experience. Better yet, spend some money on new seats (ie all coach class cabin) and and hand out soda's without cups (drink from the can), saving the cup costs - actually you could just have coolers on the jetway and you can pick up a cold soda while boarding eliminating the need for inflight service domestically.

For international you could hand out frozen meals and put some microwaves or ovens that customers could use to heat their own meals. Actually this would be a nice plus as you could pick your meal time.

The other inflight enhancement could be removing of all but one lav. You could also pass around bed pans for bathroom breaks. The lav could have a basin to empty and clean the bed pan.

If this policy sticks around Im sorry but US can kiss my revenue dollars away BYE BYE while I keep passriding on US and pay CO my $$$ if UA doesn't buy them anytime soon.

"When you have this kind of operating reality, we have to look at all areas of the business to generate revenue," said Morgan Durrant, a US Airways spokesman, adding that a passenger flying on a free award ticket is taking a seat away from a paying consumer.

Can you really say this with a straight face? Do you know just how many people are getting those X seats that we could have sold? Have you ever tried to search for an X seat when the customer is standing at your counter searching for a "flexible" date ticket to use their free voucher (same booking code as the FFer awards). Really, I would be embarrassed to have actually uttered these words and have them recorded for all to hear or see.
IF the company really wants to have the b*((s to change the FF system, then you need to OPEN UP THE X SEATS within a day or 2 of flying on flights that are only half to 3/4 full. Do you know how many customers I've had trying to get an X seat on flights that arent even close to full (and NO many didnt buy a ticket on us when they were told of the fare, they were pissed that they couldnt use their free ticket with a half full plane and walked away to get a ticket from someone else who was cheaper.) Now, even if you DO open up the seats within 14 days on lightly booked flights, you're still gonna get the $75 from each customer who does this.
If you guys are gonna play tight with this, then you need to make it work both ways. If the flights are full and you think that you can sell that last minute ticket instead of giving it away with an X seat, then by all means, go for it, I like the paycheck. On the other hand, you gotta give some LUV at the same time guys. You (and the rest of us) I'm afraid are gonna find out that you cant keep taking without giving something in return. Unfortunately I'm afraid of what our new give is gonna be.

ABC News just ran a segment about this. The example they used of course, was US Airways Shuttle from New York to Boston being worth one hundred something miles. They interviewed airline passengers in Boston and New York, some that were clearly not in our terminals so weren't even flying US. Just a nice segment making US Airways look like the meanest and stingiest airline flying.

Sorry folks, from a business perspective, US Airways deserves to go out of business.

It was on CNN too, nothing like negative press to make US Airways look stupid.

Well, at least the "Brain Trust" were kind enough to announce it early in the year, that way I can collect miles on another carrier, and avoid US Airways altogether. I would have been mad to have been stuck with all these US Airways miles, only to be unable to reach a given FF status because many of my short (yet expensive) flights were no longer worth much.

At least now I can just go with Delta, instead of spreading my travel between carriers to reach status with both.

Seriously, who comes up with this stuff...? Idiots.
