This past Wednesday night here in CLT, we had a 767 ferry in from PIT. We were told to clean it and prep it for a charter in the morning. Morning comes around, crew shows up and ferries the plane back to PIT to use it as a charter out of PIT for the University of PIT
Now isn't this just a completely assinine waste of money and resources?

The ferry came in from PHL. It had approximately 7000 lbs of bags.

It was not a wasted effort.

Came from PHL...always good to check the facts.

You are so right Lindy..

Sending an aircraft from PHL full of bags is not a waste at all!! I mean think about it, a 767 fueled for an empty run from PHL to CLT.. Then it gets cleaned and ferried to PIT completely empty with say the exception of some COMAT and a set of golf clubs.

You must be in management to think for One min. that its perfectly normal for any airline to ferry baggage from one city or another using an ETOPS widebody aircraft. It's not a waste at all.

Duh!! Its total waste.. Pure and simple..

What other options are available for moving that amount of "lost" luggage...?

You have to use a 50 million dollar aircraft burning X amount of fuel an hour to haul baggage from CLT to PHL..

7000lbs of Luggage.. My friggin truck can haul that much.. Duh..

The statement was "Waste".. How much can you shove into a Tractor Trailer and run it from PHL to CLT.. My guess it would be a whole hell of alot cheaper than flying a 767 and Crew!!!

The point of the original post was waste..

Now we all know using a 767 to ferry baggage is waste..

No my truck can not haul 233 bags unless you attached a trailer to it.. Could it haul 7000lbs of weight.. You bet it can and for quite a bit less money than flying a 767 from PHL to CLT to PIT empty..

Waste is the post.. And that was total waste..

justaumechanic, maybe we just had to take the hit to get the bags back to the custmers that we boned over Christmas. If we ever used our resources for a good cause I think this was it. With all the money we throw away at this place, this is not one I would pick apart. I am sure you have plenty of other good examples of wasted time, energy and money. This one could be left alone.

Yo dude. Do you know anything about crew scheduling? Do you know how this trip was orginally sold to the University of Pit? This aircraft was originally a spare in CLT. Due to the 330 damaged in SJU, the aircraft had to be put in service for European service. When it became evident that OCC could not get the aircraft back to CLT or that the crew could deadhead to PHL in time to ferry the aircraft to PIT in order to make the charter commitment, OCC took the best option available.

Before you start running your mouth, learn how the rest of the airline operates.

BTW..I am not in management. I am just a union member who shows up everyday for work.

It was the best option to use, as you needed the bags in CLT as soon as possible, to be sorted for the 0800 complex. I'm sure it costs more $$, but you were in a dire situation and needed results.

Other 767's came in with triple that load during this fiasco. It wasn't any fun and required many extra hours of unloading/sorting/loading. But, the work had to be done...!
