What's new

New 321s

Well then maybe they where saying the are not going to INDOC it until Monday or Tuesday. That was the word from PIT MX this morning.
Did you ever think that this, um, misunderstanding, is a clear and unambiguous indicator of a high cost operation? You guys with access to computers and telephones cannot even get your stories straight, a core job for executives. Seems it is way past time to fire some.

was just wondering the same thing... was supposed to be in PIT 2 days ago... pics pics pics dying to see what it looks like inside
Just looks like a new bus. Has the LED over head lights. No inflight entertainment(November we may start to put in the WiFi, $$). Has LCD screens (not as brite as CRT's) ,cockpit and main entryway. All leather seats. We are taking out the ovens. Waiting for the engineering order for what to do with all the wireing. Engines don't look like CFMs. Unless this is the next generation CFM. The tail pipe is scalloped. And it's not as narrow as the IAE. Didn't have the cowl doors poped or the T/R's.

For what it's worth, the Airways Magazine fleet update website lists the delivery as an A321-211 which would be a CFM engined aircraft. I don't know how accurate they are or where they get information, so take it with a grain of salt.

OldGuy:

I was told the engines are GE. Not sure what they type is, but I was on the ramp when it came into PIT, and the engines were larger in diameter than the CFM's, and they had sculpted engine ehxaust nozzles. Maybe someone in MTC can tell us which engine option this is.

GE does not make its own engine for the A320 family, it is a joint venture between SNECMA and GE, which produces the CFM Engine.

Engine Overview

The CFM56-5B is the engine of choice for the A320 family, having been selected to power nearly 60 percent of the A318/A319/A320/A321 aircraft ordered. One of the primary factors behind the CFM56-5B's broad-based market acceptance has been its simple, rugged architecture, which gives it the highest reliability, durability, and repairability in its class. In addition, CFM continually invests in technology enhancements that make the engines even better.

Will the new A321's be capable of flying PHL-SFO nonstop in the winter? I hope the range is increased. If they are going to need to stop for fuel, I hope US management will permit its customers to step off and get a bite to eat.

I've been on the ramp for more than 10 years, and all I can tell you is that the engines on the A321 that came into PIT on Friday were larger in diameter than usual by a wide margin. They also had wider fan blades than the other engines, and had a sculpted exhaust nozzle/diffuser which I have not seen on a US bird. Maybe they are a new generation of CFM.

Does anyone have pics of this beaut? and when does she do into revenue service? When is 194 coming?

I thought changing engines changes the type as well. Take 75's for example: RR or GE..different types.

Who is to say it's not a CFM with a new tailpipe? The scalloped jetpipes are becoming popular because they dramatically diffuse exhaust noise levels.

What do you mean by type?

Different engines change model number, but not type.

For pilots, an A320 type rating allows for flying all A320 models, as well as their derivatives (A318, A319, A321.) Doesn't matter which engine is on it. I suspect the A320 pilots will all be given "training via memo" to take care of any engine differences once the fleets are integrated.

My 757 type rating says nothing about RR engines only.

Aren't all new orders coming with IAE motors?

US Airways Group Inc. has signed signed a long-term maintenance agreement with IAE International Aero Engines.

The contract covers engines used on the airline’s fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft.

The agreement, which extends to 2032, will initially cover 74 V2500-A5 powered aircraft already in service and engines for 78 aircraft that US Airways ordered last year.

I'm almost positive these are IAE on all new orders arriving as we speak, the A321 that arrived last week until we have an actual pic, but from what it sounds like it is an IAE engine.

The next few 321's that are coming are supposed to be CFM's (321-211's) and after that all new deliveries will have the V2500 engines (321-232's or -231's). Someone had the list with all of the line numbers and types from Airbus but I can't remember where I saw it.

They aren't BIGGER. They are just plain old CFM's.
